Brussels Bulls tie Walkerton in season opener The Brussels Bulls’ debut in the Western Jr. C. league ended in a 6-6 tie against the host Walkerton Blackhawks Sunday afternoon. The hometown Hawks jumped quickly into a 2-0 lead over a nervous Bulls squad before a Marty Rutledge powerplay goal set up by Bevin Flett cut the margin. Min utes later Rutledge scored a short- handed goal to tie the score but celebration was shortlived as Walkerton rallied to take a 3-2 lead to the dressing room. The score remained the same to late in the second period when Ron Strome and Rutledge combined on the powerplay for a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes. Penalty problems kept the Bulls from mounting any consistent offensive pressure in the first two periods. Brussels came out flying in the third period and surprised Walker ton with three goals in the first two minutes of play. Ryan Gallagher opened the scoring with an assist to Kevin Dejong; Rutledge completed his hat trick with an unassisted effort and finally Andrew Weber tucked one upstairs on passes from Strome and Rutledge. Due to a second period altercation which sent four Bulls to the showers including their top two defenceman Hewitt and Flett, the Juniors simply ran out of gas late in the game as the Blackhawks rebound ed to tie the score. Tension mounted as the Bulls played short- handed for the last two minutes but excellent penalty killing and the goaltending of Murray Foxton pre served the tie. Observations of Jr. C. hockey were obvious. The speed of the game is quicker and while perhaps not as dirty as Jr. D., the players continually finish their checks. Congratulations to Ryan Galla her and Andrew Weber on notch ing the first goals of their junior career. Off-ice activities included the signing of Ron Buchanan from last year as well as Paul Sebastian (Milverton) and Andrew Hender son (Listowel). Also Coach Nichol appointed Ron Strome as the Captain of the Bulls with Bevin The Bulls’ next game is Sunday Flett and Marty Rutledge as his . night at 8:30 p.m. in Arthur vs. the assistants.
