Blyth Inn wins slo-pitch title The Blyth Inn Slo-Pitch team captured the ‘A’ Championship at the Belgrave Kinsmen Tournament this past weekend by winning four consecutive games. In the team’s first game Kinloss provided the opposition with the Blyth Inn being victorious by a 14 to 6 score. In their second game the Inn scored early and often with six runs in the first inning and six more in the second on route to a 19 to 3 victory over the Wingham Smokies. In the semi-final the Inn played Aylmer, Aylmer went in front early but the Inn continued their strong hitting and fought back to a 10 to 4 win. In the ‘A’ Division Final the Inn came up against the Wingham Lumber Kings. These two teams have met several times in the past with all games being very close. The Inn scored five runs in their first bat and built up an early lead. However, the Lumber Kings fought back and may have won if not for a great running catch by Steve Howson in centre field as he crashed into the fence, and a game-ending double play. The final score was 12 to 9. Wayne McDougall and Pat Cron­ in homered to lead the hitting in the final game. Kevin Coultes led the team hitting over the weekend with 13 hits in 14 times at bat. Barney Stewart pitched four out­ standing games and was supported by strong defence. Brussels Bantams edge Listowel , It was the fourth inning that defeated the Listowel Tri-County Bantam Girls when Brussels blast­ ed eight runs home in Brussels on July 12. The Brussels girls were losing three to two after the first three innings but the fourth inning put the score 10 to five in their favor. The final score was 11 to seven for Brussels. Shari Jacklin was the pitcher for Brussels and threw 13 strikeouts. Krista Hastings of Brussels made a spectacular catch in the top of the fifth to get a runner out on first. This win leaves the girls only one game away from the playoffs. Brussels Bantams Sports Can’t sneak past me Darlene Black of the Brussels Bantam Girls team struggled valiantly to keep this Listowel competitor from making third safely. The Brusselsteam wasvictoriousdefeating the Listowel team 11 to seven after seven innings. Shari Jacklin pitched 13 strikeouts. 8 ladies teams play in Walton tournament The Walton Ladies Annual Slo- Pitch tournament was held this past weekend, July 14 and 15 at the Walton Bail park. The weather was perfect for the eight teams participating in this event. Action started on Friday night at 7 p.m. with Brodhagen Bombers defeating the Wellesley Emeralds 15 to 2. The Goderich Gardiners then defeated the Londesboro Angels 23 to 15 at the 8:15 game. The 9:30 game saw the Monkton ladies defeat the Mitchell ladies 7 to 0. Saturday morning at 9:00 was bright and sunny for the St. Marys Blowes Travellers to defeat the Atwood Mamas 9 to 3. Second round action saw the Wellesley Emeralds defeat the Londesboro Angels 25 to 2 and eliminate them fron the tourna­ ment. The noon game featured a good game between Brodhagen Bombers and the Goderich Gardi­ ners with Brodhagen emerging the victor 18 to 13. Another close game followed between Mitchell ladies and the Atwood Mamas with Mitchell advancing to the “B” Final with an 8 to 3 win. The Monkton ladies then advanced to the “A” final by defeating the St. Marys Blowes Travellers 14 to 1. The “B” Final was played at 4:30 with Mitchell ladies defeating the Wellesley Emeralds 6 to 2 in a good close ball game. The “A” Final saw the Brod­ hagen Bombers defeat the Monk- ton ladies 12 to 4. It was a close game with Monkton being ahead 2 to 1 until the fourth inning when Brodhagen exploded for six runs and then five more runs in the fifth inning. It was a good game enjoyed by all. win easily It was an easy victory for the Brussels Bantam Girls when they played Belmore (in Belmore) on July 4 and won 26 to five. In the first inning, Brussels really showed their stuff when they brought 14 runners home. After this scoring torrent, they took it easy on Belmore, scoring 12 runs in the next four innings. Belmore hit all their runs home in the fourth inning. The game only ran for five innings. Michelle Machan pitched the entire game for the Brussels team and also had a home run in the fourth inning. Auburn ladies softball tourney this weekend Twelve teams will take part in the annual ladies softball tourna­ ment in Auburn on the weekend. Teams from Sebringville, Wyom­ ing, Gorrie, Belmore, Goderich, Biuevale, Blyth and Auburn wills take part in the three day tourna­ ment starting Friday night. The winners will be crowned Sunday afternoon. Down but not out This member from the Lanesville men’s slo-pitch team managed to slide past Wingham’s third baseman at the Belgrave Kinsmen Tournament this past weekend. The event which was held over four days attracted 16 men’s teams and eight ladies’ teams. Belgrave tourney hosts 24 slo-pitch teams Sixteen men’s teams and eight ladies’ teams participated ip the annual Belgrave Kinsmen Slo-Pitch Tournament that began last Thurs­ day night and ended on Sunday. In the Men’s division, the Kin­ loss team defeated the Belgrave Diggers four to two to take home the ‘B’ championship while the ‘A’ trophy was won by the Blyth Inn team who edged out the Wingham Lumber Kings 12 to nine. For the Ladies’ finals, Court­ ney’s Curves trounced the Bel­ grave Ladies 22 to 6 winning the ‘B’ division. Dar Lyn Pools of Kincardine narrowly defeated the Teeswater Jets eight to six taking home the ‘A’ Division title. WHYTE BROS.
