The Citizen, 1989-03-15, Page 3A team from the Blyth and District Fire Department proved to be sharp on Saturday as they won the “B” championship at a dart tournament among area fire departments held in Wingham. Vernon Bromley, Connie Bromley, Brad Montgomery and Maureen Montgomery brought home the trophy for the second time in three years. Blyth. People Doris Hicks and Mary Warwick have returned from a two-week Ellison Tour to and in Florida. In Central Florida they took in many attractions around Kissimmee where they had time to relax during a five-day stay. They spent two days in Miami and one day in the Keys and Key West. Mrs. Bonnie Shannon and boys Darryl, Corey, Nathan and Devin went on Sunday to visit with Jack, Shirley, Kari and Kurt Johnson of London. On Saturday, Feb. 25, young and old alike enjoyed the Blyth United Church Skating party. Because the 1988 skating party had been cancelled due to a storm, the enthusiasm for the 1989 party was high. Prize winners were: Best cos tume - child, Jennifer Pierce; best costume - adult, Mrs. Betty Lewis; funniest costume - boy, Chad Haggitt; funniest costume - girl, Kim Ferguson; best couple - Heidi and Laura Meier; best group - Julie, Michellen, Kandice and Sar ah McNichol; oldest skaters, Mr. and Mrs. Jim McCall; youngest skater, Raymond De Boer; largest family on skates, the Herb Shannon family. After the skating party a pot luck supper was enjoyed by all at the Church. Blyth $300,000 PRIDE program outlined The submission and bylaws for Blyth’s $300,000 PRIDE (Program for Renewal, Improvement, Deve lopment and Economic Revitaliza tion) program has been submitted to the Ministry of Municipal Affairs following a public meeting held Feb. 28. Clerk-treasurer Helen Grubb told council last Wednesday that the papers had been sent to the minister’s office along with letters of commitment from all the area service groups involved in the program. The program provides $150,000 of provincial money to be matched by a further $150,000 from local sources. The public meeting was told $52,000 had been committed by service groups. Four areas have been designated for “soft” services (social and recreation facilities). Lions Park will see improvements to the wading pool, picnic shelter, fencing and playground equipment. The program calls for the Rad ford baseball diamond to get new lights, fencing, landscaping, sodd ing, playground equipment and bleachers however, Mrs. Grubb told council Wednesday that there is still a chance money for this project might be approved under a grant from the Ministry of Tourism and Recreation. A decision will be made by the Ministry about April 1 and if the grant is successful it would free up mcney from the PRIDE grant to be used elsewhere. Improvements to camping facili ties, seats, and bleachers will be made at the fairgrounds. The Blyth and District Community Centre will get an expanded kitchen and a commercial dishwasher. Hard services will receive $190,000 of the grant. Included are plans for the Public Utilities Com mission to upgrade main street water and electrical services in conjunction with the rebuilding of main street by the Ministry of Transportation. The Ministry’s plans are still not firm so the plans have been left to the third year of the program. Also planned are two new en trance signs to the village at a cost of $30,000 to be erected at the north and east limits of the village; new plants on main street; side walk replacements and boulevard improvements and paving of the backlanes behind main street buildings. The story on the salary settle ment for the Huron County Ele mentary school teachers meant to say that principals In elementary schools receive $10,850 over the normal pay an ordinary teacher with the same qualifications would receive. Instead it may have Inad vertently suggested principals re ceived a $10,850 raise. The Citizen regrets any misunderstanding this may have caused.
