Blyth Novices win 5-1
The Blyth Novice “A” hockey
team travelled to Teeswater on
Saturday, Feb. 18 to play game two
of their series with Teeswater.
Blyth had to come from behind in
game one to salvage a tie, in the
dying seconds against a hot goal
tender.
In game two, Jeff Cowan explod
ed with the puck from the opening
face-off, split the Teeswater of
fence, and beat the surprised
goalie, only seconds into the game.
The kid line of Cowan, Bromley and
Haggitt continued their strong play
scoring goal two minutes later.
Michael Haggitt blasting the puck
-behind the Teeswater goalie, set up
by this linemates Darryl Bromley
and Jeff Cowan. Near the end of
the first period, Blyth took a
commanding lead on a goal scored
by Jeff Cowan, set up on a pass by
Darryl Bromley. This made the
score 3-0 for Blyth. Blyth continued
their strong play into the second
period and at the four minute mark,
Michael Haggitt tipped the puck
over the line on a goal-mouth
scramble with linemate Darryl
Bromley picking up the assist.
In the third period Mark
“Sparky” Wilson scored on a blast
which seemed to handcuff the
shell-shocked Teeswater goalie.
With only 1:35 left in the game
Shane Burkholder lost his shut-out.
when Teeswater scored their only
goal. The defensive parings of Jeff
Ferguson, Corey Shannon and
Ronnie Abel-Rinn and team captain
Greg Blok kept Teeswater’s two top
scorers silent. Special mention to
Dan Chamney who played a strong
game.
Blyth takes a 3 to 1 lead in points
in this series. Next game is also in
Teeswater this Saturday, Feb. 25 at
12 noon. A win or tie will win this
series for Blyth, but if necessary,
game four will be played Sunday,
Feb. 26 at 4:30 in Blyth. If Blyth
wins or ties Saturday, they will
start their series with Clifford, in
Blyth on Sunday.
Shooters from Blyth Public School recently did well at the free throw basketball competition at St. Joseph’s school in
Clinton. Bringing home trophies as tops in their age group were: [left to right] Pauline Stewart, Christopher Howson,
Chris Stewart, and Karen Bromley.
