Farm Huron Junior Farmers raise funds for dogs Livestock report Active demand shown at Brussels Friday The market at Brussels Livestock Inc. on Friday met an active demand on choice steers and heifers, selling $1.50 higher with second class cattle selling steady. There were 672 slaughter cattle, 157 sfockers and feeders, and 258 pigs on offer. Choice steers sold for $90 to $95 with sales to $100; good steers brought $85 to $90. Five steers consigned by Tim Prior of RR 3, Brussels, weighing 1240 lbs., sold for an average of $92.42. Two steers consigned by Keith Jacklin of RR 2, Bluevale, averaging 1350 lbs., sold for an average price of $93.75. Ten steers consigned by Paul JOhnston of RR 2, Bluevale, aver­ aging 1199 lbs., sold for an average price of $93.23. Twenty-eight steers consigned by Maple Em­ blem Farms of RR 1, Dungannon, averaging 1286 lbs., sold for an average price of $91.20. Six steers consigned by Ken Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale, averaging 1277 lbs., sold for an average price of $91.06. Forty-nine steers consigned by Underwood Farms of RR 1, Wing­ ham averaging 1347 lbs., sold for Brussels hosts beef debate Brussels will host one of two education meetings for beef produ­ cers in Huron county prior to the beef cattle marketing votes. A meeting of beef producers will be held April 3 at 8 p.m. at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Com­ munity Centre. The other Huron meeting will be March 31 at the Exeter Legion Hall at 8 p.m. At the meetings, which will also be held in Walkerton, Harriston and Stratford, there will be a debate between representatives of the Ontario Cattleman’s Associa­ tion and the Beef Producers for Change Inc. The debate will be moderated by representatives from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. Producers will have an opportunity to ask questions at the meetings. The mail-in vote scheduled for April 14 will ask eligible beef producers to decide the future of the marketing system for their industry. The vote follows one of the recommendations made by the 1988 Ontario Beef Marketing Task Force. About 40 meetings will be held across Ontario in late March and early April. an average price of $89.74. Eleven steers consigned by Jim Hayden of RR 3, Goderich, averag­ ing 1483 lbs., sold for an average price of $89.52. Choice heifers brought $90 to $95 with sales to $100; good heifers sold at $85 to $90. Fourteen heifers consigned by Fred Marshall of RR 3, Fergus, averaging 1269 lbs., sold for an average price of $89.53. Twenty heifers consigned by Don Fraser of RR 2, Blyth, averaging 1246 lbs., sold for an average price of $89.13. Ten heifers consigned by Wayne King of RR 1, Gorrie, averaging 1029 lbs. sold for an average price of $89.12. One Limousin bull, weighing 2070 lbs., consigned by John Dietrich of Mitchell, sold for a price of $79.50. DI and D2 cows sold for $50 to $54 with sales to $61.50; D3 and D4 cows brought $47 to $50; and canners and cutters fetched $43 to $47. Weaner pigs under 40 lbs. sold for 72 to 80 cents with an average price of 75 cents; 40 to 50 lb. pigs sold for 55 to 77 cents, with an average of 71 cents; 50 to 60 lb. pigs brought 63.5 to 67 cents with an average of 65 cents; and 60 to 70 lb. pigs brought 40 to 65 cents with an average of 56 cents. Brussels Livestock Inc. will be holding a lamb and goat sale along with the regular sales on February 24. The Annual Provincial Junior Farmer Conference and Banquet, ‘The Challenge is Mine in ‘89’, will be held March 17 -19 at the Skyline Hotel Toronto. Junior Farmers from all over the province will be attending putting in motion their motto ‘Self Help and Community Betterment’, For several weeks prior to the Conference Junior Farmer Clubs across the province will be raising funds for this year’s Provincial Fund Raiser, Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. This project con­ cludes at the Conference when their combined efforts are present­ ed to the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind provides the visually impair­ ed with the freedom of mobility that many of us take for granted. Victoria County gets I PM The central Ontario county of Victoria has been chosen to host the 1992 International Plowing Match and Farm Machinery Show. Victoria beat Bruce County and Durham REgion for the honour of hosting the yearly plowing match, the Ontario Plowmen’s Association announced Tuesday at its annual convention. Victoria County, which includes the town of Lindsay, is about 80 kilometers northeast of Toronto. The host of the match is named years in advance to allow the association and the local volunteer committee time to organize the event. This year’s match is to be held in Essex County near Windsor, 1990’s is set for Brant County near Brantford, and the 1991 event will be held near Sarnia, in Lambton County. In 1988 members of the Junior Farmers’ Association of Ontario raised close to $25,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and in 1987 donated over $16,000 to the Children’s Wish Foundation. The local Junior Farmers group hopes that with help they will be able to provide a blind person with a Guide Dog. They want help to meet ‘The Challenge’ and fulfill their motto ‘Self Help and Comm­ unity Betterment’.
