Bulls thump Braves, finish in second place Brian Campbell [7] of the Brussels Bulls waits for a possible rebound that never came as Marty Rutledge buries a shot behind the Tavistock Braves goaltender in OHA Junior D action in Brussels Sunday. Rutledge led a third period surge that buried Tavistock 7-2 and clinched second place for the Bulls. The Brussels Jr D Bulls finished their regular schedule with two victories over the weekend, ending their record at 20 wins, 14 losses and two ties, good enough for a second place finish in their divi sion. Friday night Brussels defeated the hometown Wellesley Apple jacks 7-4. The Bulls hit the scoreboard early as Marty Rutledge scored twice, each time on passes from Bob McMillan, at 1:41 and 2:14. Although outshot 15-8 the Bulls took a 2-0 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes. Steve Fritz and Nigel Taylor combined to set up Ken Jacklin in the slot at 1:57 of the second and the Bulls powerplay followed with a Mike Vincent goal from Marty Rutledge and Talsma to increase the margin to 4-0. As has happened all season long the Bulls again proved they hate playing with a large lead and by the three minute mark of the third period found themselves in a tie game. Captain Brian Campbell finally settled the issue going end to end for an unassisted effort at 8:03 and added an insurance goal on passes from Rutledge and Talsma with 1:46 remaining. Rut ledge picked up his fifth point of the night sending Jason Coulter in alone for an empty netter with 18 seconds left on the clock. Jeff McGavin stopped 34 shots for the win. Sunday afternoon the Bulls’ powerplay clicked for five goals in leading the Juniors to a 7-2 romp over the visitng Tavistock Braves. Tavistock opened the scoring early in the second period before the Bulls’ powerplay replied with two goals, Rutledge from Ron Strome and Vincent followed by Strome from Rutledge, for a 2-1 lead after two periods. Rutledge increased the lead to 3-1 on passes from McMillan and Coulter, then the Bulls’ powerplay went to work scoring three times: Rutledge from Talsma and Camp bell, Campbell from Vincent and Rutledge and finally Vincent from Strome and Campbell. Tavistock scored their final score before Fritz set up Vincent’s top-of-the-circle, close-my-eyes-and-shoot slapshot for the game’s final goal. The Bulls now sit for a week while the remainder of the sche dule is played and positions three through eight are settled. The Bulls record this year tied their best winning percentage in club history, a remarkable achieve ment considering only five players returned from last year’s club and the Bulls defence squad had no body with Junior Hockey experi ence. At press time Marty Rutledge who enjoyed a lopt weekend, was leading the scoring race with his nearest rival having two games remaining. Brian Campbell was running third in the race. No Bull has ever won the league scoring championship. The winner of the $50 Bulls ticket was Doug Shaw. Deitner hat trick leads Crusaders BY LOIS McARTER The Crusaders were at home on Sunday night for their only game of the week when Milverton Inter mediates were in town. The visitors opened the scoring after almost seven minutes of play but the home team came back to tie the score just two minutes later when Dave Stephenson scored on passes from Ken Cousins and Kevin McArter. With 2:06 on the clock, Dave Montgomery scored from Brian Tenpas and Troy Pocaluyka, to put the Crusaders into the lead. With 47 seconds remaining in the first period Kevin Deitner scored on a pass from brother Brian to end the period at 3-1 in Brussels’ favour. The second period had Brussels scoring the only two goals with Kevin Deitner getting both goals with an assist from Brian on the first goal and Dave Stephenson on the second goal. This completed a hat-trick for Kevin. Milverton rallied in the third period to score two quick goals at 16:51 and 15:55 to make the score 5-3. Dave Montgomery scored his second goal at 9:14 from Brian Tenpas and Troy Pocaluyka. Milverton scored once more at 7:02 with Brussels completing the scoring at 6:10 when Troy Pocaluy ka scored from Trevor Pocaluyka and Dave Montgomery to end the game at 7-4 in the Crusaders’ favour. The Crusaders will open their playoffs this coming weekend against Arthur. They will travel to Arthur on Friday night for the first game, with games two and three being played in Brussels on Satur day and Sunday nights at 8 p.m. Sports Top Wallace player sidelines Blyth A toms Belgrave Tykes tie, beat Wingham teams Belgrave Tykes came from be hind to tie Wingham’s “B” team in a game in Belgrave Feb. 7. Wingham scored first with 2:45 left in the first period but Tim Robinson scored just 28 seconds into the second to tie the game. Wingham regained the lead mid way through the period, then lengthened the lead with just 59 seconds left in the period. But Tim Robinson kept Belgrave close with a goal with only five seconds left in the period. In the third, Tim completed his hat-trick midway through the period and the two teams played scoreless hockey the rest of the way for a 3-3 tie. The Tykes did even better Feb. 10 against the Wingham “A” team when they scored a 5-1 win. Pete Irwin got Belgrave off to a fast start with a goal from Curtis Knight midway through the first. Three minutes later he scored again from Craig Marks to make it 2-0. Rob McGee, who played with the team last year and returned to play the last couple of games of this Brussels Sprouts thump Listowel The Brussels Sprouts, six and seven year old division, visited Listowel Feb. 4 and administer ed a 13-0 drubbing to the home team. Trevor Wilson scored seven goals for the winners while Ryan Smith, had three, Darrel Dalton two and Mike Cooper, one. season, scored from Brian Sinclair to widen the lead. Pete Irwin went to work again to score two unassisted goals in less than a minute to give Belgrave a 5- 0 lead. Wingham scored its only goal with just 47 seconds left in the second period. Belgrave hosted Hensall on Saturday, Feb. 11 and suffered a 9-5 loss to the strong Hensall squad. Hensall had built a 3-0 lead in the first period before Tim Robin son scored Belgrave’s first goal. Hensall added two more goals before the period ended then struck early in the final period to take a 6- 1 lead before Pete Irwin went to work to make things closer. He scored two unassisted goals in just over a minute then, after Hensall got one back, he scored two more goals. But that was as close as the home team could get as Hensall struck for two more late goals to pull away. Overloads still hot The Blyth ‘Radfords Overloads’ Oldtimers stretched their unbeaten streak to six games with a 7 to 4 victory over the Seaforth Queens this past week. Wayne McDougall led the offen sive attack with five goals, while John Watson and J. D. Carter scored singles. The Overloads will play their next two games on the road, Wed., Feb. 15 in Hanover and Friday, Feb. 17 in Huron Park. BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Atoms were eliminat ed from W.O.A.A. playoffs last week as they were swept by Wallace in two straight games. Wallace dominated in an 8-3 open ing game victory but Blyth reboun ded in game two before coming up just short in an 8-6 loss. Blyth came up flat in the opener as Wallace’s number 12 scored six goals and led his team to victory. Wallace led 4-1 after two periods with Blyth’s lone goal coming as a result of some nice passing. Henry Bos sent Christopher Howson and Ryan Chamney in on a two-on-one break as Ryan finished off the play. Wallace increased their lead to 6-1 early in the third before Blyth scored two quick goals. Ryan Chamney scored his second goal of the game over a fallen goaltender as Henry Bos set him up from behind the net. Brian McNichol then scored from close range with Scott Arthur garnering a well deserved assist. Blyth couldn’t get any closer as Wallace scored two late goals for an easy 8-3 win. Blyth played a solid game in the return matchup in Blyth last Satur day, but once again, number 12 for Wallace made the difference as he scored four goals and assisted on two more to lead his team to an 8-6 win. Wallace led 2-0 after one period but Blyth stormed back to take a 4-3 lead after two periods. Christopher Howson got Blyth on the scoreboard as he one-timed the puck after being set up by Henry Bos, and Jonathan Collins. Scott Arthur scored next as linemates Brian McNichol and Jason Rut ledge helped out. Brian McNichol tied the game 3-3 with a blast to the top corner with assists to Jason Rutledge and Brad Anderson. Two minutes later Brian gave Blyth a 4-3 lead as Scott Arthur made the pass across the crease and Brian tipped it in. This set the tone for an entertain ing, high-powered third period as the lead changed hands with every goal. Wallace tied it early but Blyth stormed back nine seconds later to restore their one goal lead. Ryan Chamney scored on a long shot with assists to Christopher Howson and Henry Bos. Wallace, or should I say number 12, scored the next two goals to take a lead once again but Blyth hung tough. Seventeen seconds after Wallace took their lead Henry Bos tied the game at 6-6 as Jonathan Collins set him up for the shot. The game remained tied until less than one minute left in the game when Wallace’s number 12 performed more of his magic as he scored the winning goal. Blyth pulled their goalie in a last ditch effort to tie the game but the move backfired as number 12 scored into an empty net from his own end. Wallace eliminated Blyth from further Ontario playdowns with this 8-6 win. Blyth played with a lot of heart and desire and gave it their all even though they came up just short. Blyth now falls back into their group playoffs as they wait an opponent. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Bobby Clarke: “Championships are the ultimate for any athlete but you don’t really need championships to be fulfilled. The satisfaction of knowing that you’re doing the best you can at your job is the most important. Then you can look at yourself in the mirror and be content.’’ Brussels edges Elma-Logan Atoms Brussels Atoms “A” team edged Elma-Logan 1-0 in a tight game played Saturday.
