Robbie Burns, born January 25, 1759 (just 230 years ago), was hailed as Scotland’s national poet and he wrote lyrics to many of Scotland’s traditional music which was handed down from generation to generation. In all, he produced over 350 songs including the words to Auld Lang Syne which we sing at the beginning of each new year. The lyrics to traditional songs, Annie Laurie and Loch Lomond, are linked to Lady John Scott who at one time wandered the streets of Edinburgh, listening to the songs of children and people on the street. She wrote the words and music down and had these songs published in the form we know them today. The Blyth Festival Singers, a community based choir of over 40 members, draws its musical talent from Exeter, Clinton, Stratford, Seaforth, Auburn, Wingham, Blyth, Brussels, Londesboro, Wroxeter, Goderich, Ethel, Varna and Belgrave. Carol Carter of Seaforth, an accomplished pianist is the accompanist of the Singers. Choir Director is Angus Sinclair of Stratford, an outstanding organist and musician.
