The Citizen, 1989-02-01, Page 18From the Minister’s Study THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1989. PAGE 19. The Bible tells the rules of God’s judgement BY BOB BARNHART PASTOR BLYTH CHURCH OF GOD In a free society one of the rights that we seek to ensure is that of a fair and just trial. One day each of us will stand before God at the judgement seat. In Romans chapter two, verses one to 16 Paul states three princi ples God will use at the judgement. The first is in verses one through four. God’s judgement will not be with a self righteous attitude. In verses one to three, we see the highest form of hypocrisy. Those who were accusing and judging others were themselves doing the U.C.W.resumes Nestle boycott The 237 delegates to Huron- Perth Presbyterial United Church Women’s Annual Meeting passed a motion to resume the boycott of Nestle products. Meeting in God erich on January 23, the women were concerned that once more baby formula was being sold to people without the necessary sup ply of safe water. A list of all Nestle products will be distributed in February. A resolution is being worded for presentation to the appropriate government office urging a ban on the use of CFC’s (chlorofluoro carbons) in aerosol containers be cause of their damaging effect on the ozone layer. Reports were received by the president, Mrs. Helen Anderson, of St. John’s Stratford, and showed a continuation of support for Opti mism Place and the House of Friendship, church camps and other local projects. This year five young siblings of a Vietnamese refugee couple arrived in Canada on December 7, 1988. U.C.W. members had been active in mak ing preparations for their arrival, and were on hand to see them outfitted with needed winter boots and coats when they came. At the meeting, another quilt was donated for the family. Topics studied during the year ranged from Alzheimer’s Disease and Farm Debts, to Crimestoppers and Food Irradiation. Help was extended to shut-ins, nursing homes and other on-going projects, and also to emergency causes like Jamaican hurricane relief. Groups learned about foreign countries all the way from Poland and Russia to New Guinea and Nepal. Familiar hymns were sung under the leadership of Pat Carter and Leona McBride of Goderich; the worship service was presented by Donna Tuffnail and Shirley Hac kett, both of Stratford. Ruth Dick, U.C.W. Conference President conducted election of officers for 1989, and they were installed by Rev. John Hoekstra, Chairman of Huron-Perth Presby tery. Helen Anderson continues as President, and Verna Burgin, Kirk ton, and Carolyn Hoshel, Donegal, as vice-presidents. Audrey McGre gor, Clinton, becomes Secretary, and Beth Tubb, Mitchell becomes Treasurer. same things. It brings disgrace and dishonor to Christianity when someone accuses or condemns someone for doing wrong and then people find out they are doing the same things. This will not happen with God’s judgement. Also God’s judgement is done with kindness, tolerance and pa tience. This is done for a reason which is to lead people to repen tance. We find this in verse four. The second principle is in verses five through 11. The main point is summarized in verse 11, “For God does not show favouritism.” The Jews were thinking because they were Jews they would receive special treatment. That is not true. We would yell injustice if two men went before the same judge on the same charge and one got a 10 year prison term and the other got off free because he was related to the judge. God doesn’t have one standard for preachers and one for factory workers and one for politi cians. God’s standard is the same for all regardless of race, national ity, power, money or lack of it. The third principle is in verse 12 through 15. God judges us accord ing to the light that we have. I was preaching at a Church of God in Montreal and after the service I was getting a tour of Montreal. I then was told that it was illegal to turn right on a red light. In Ontario it is legal to turn right on red. I wouldn’t think it was fair if I had driven to Montreal for the first time and had turned right on red and got a ticket. For someone living there they couldn’t say it was unfair for them to get a ticket. This doesn’t mean that we when stand before God we can claim ignorance be cause God will reveal things to us and how we respond to them is what we will be judged on. I now know that in Monteal it is illegal to turn right on red so how I respond to that is what is important now. The conclusion is in Verse 16: God will judge through Jesus Christ. John five, 22 says: “more over the father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgement to the Son”. Jesus will use the same principles. He will not judge from hypocrisy because he was only one who was tempted as were yet he was without sin. Jesus will not show favouritism. He will also judge people by the light they have. There is a reason God has turned the judgement over to Son. It is stated in verse 23, of chapter five of the Gospel of John. It says, “That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.” Blyth Christian highway Reformed Church 4, blyth Sunday at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Rev. W.H.
