Belgrave Pee Wees win regular games, lose playoffs Brussels Bantams ‘B’ runners-up in Paisley The Belgrave Pee Wees won the last regular season game but lost two playoff games to Wallace. BELGRAVE 3 - BLYTH 1 Monday night, Belgrave and Blyth finished the regular season in a very well played game by both teams. Mark Robinson’s goal from Brad Robinson was the only scoring of the first period. In the second period, Brandon Coultes tapped in a Brad Robinson shot to put Belgrave ahead 2-0. Brad Robinson then scored on a nice solo effort that ended with a wrap-around from behind the net. Conrad Bos scored from Mike Bromley for Blyth to complete the scoring for the second period and the game. The Belgrave team played well as a unit, with good skating, passing and defensive play. WALLACE 10 - BELGRAVE 0 Wednesday night, Belgrave 2nd curling draw complete The second draw of the Mixed Curling Club ended recently with the following teams in the top place. In the first place with 43 points, Stew Steiss, Darlene Oldfield, Lyle Martin, Gerald White; second, 42 points; Jim Patterson, Jo-Ann Mc­ Donald, George Zwep and Michael Alexander; third, 40.5 points Mervyn Bauer, Fran Bremner, Valerie Watson and John Lowe; Belgrave Atoms Saturday morning found Brus­ sels Atoms at Belgrave. A good game was played with Chris Piluke and Brent Robinson getting one goal a piece. In Brussels Gene Johnston getting one as well. Due to fine goal keeping from Brian Marks, final score was Belgrave 2, Brussels 1. Saturday morning found the boys played the first game of the playoffs and as the score would indicate the puck did not want to stay out of the Belgrave net. Wallace jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and were ahead 7-0 after the second period. WALLACE 6 - BELGRAVE 2 Thursday night, Wallace elimi­ nated Belgrave from further O.M.H.A. play. As with the first game, Belgrave played well but were behind 2-0 after the first period. In the second period, Brent Robinson scored with Corey Moran and Doug Wilson getting the assists. Brad Robinson then tied the score from Peter Gusso. Wal­ lace scored to lead 3-2. In the third period, Wallace scored on a long hard slapshot that spelled the end for the Belgrave boys. fourth, 40 points Max Oldfield, Pauline Patterson, Tom Warwick and Steve Adams. Two ladies teams from Brussels competed in the Robbie Bums Bonspiel in Seaforth. The team consisting of JoAnn McDonald, Velma Locking, Joan Perrie and Linda Gingerich won the Overall Trophy with 56 points. The team of Fran Bremner, Nora Stephenson, Sharon Cowman and Bev Steven­ son came in second. win 1, lose 1 back at it again at Clinton. The game was a close one, but Belgrave just didn’t have enough of the right moves. Brent Robinson scored twice, but it was not enough. Clinton came on strong scoring three goals. Due to the excellent goal tending by Chris Piluke, the final score remained at 3-2 for Clinton. Brussels Bantams played Wiar- ton in their first game at the Paisley tournament. The first period was scoreless. Brussels’ first goal was scored by Brett Lee assisted by Darren Johnston and Sharon Jack- lin. Greg Mulvey put Brussels up two and three minutes later Shawn Jacklin made it 3-0 after two periods. Wiarton opened the third period with five unanswered goals to take a 5-3 lead. With 43 seconds remaining Brussels’ Darren John­ stone scored assisted by Greg Mulvey and Shawn Jacklin. Brus­ sels pulled their goalie but were not successful and Wiarton scored into an empty net with one second remaining giving Wiarton a 6-4 win. Brussels Atoms win first playoff game from Brussels Atoms began their On­ tario Minor Hockey Association playoff series with Howick on a winning note January 26 when they brought home a victory Howick. Sometimes three of the Tykes joined the team: Curtis Knight, Craig Marks and Tyler Fenton. As long as there is ice in Belgrave the team will continue to meet Wednesday from 6:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. Brussels’ second game was against Shallow Lake which was a favourite team to win this tourna­ ment. Brussels’ Brett Lee scored early in the first period to give Brussels the lead assisted by Shawn Jacklin. Shallow Lake tied the score at 1-1 with six seconds remaining. Both teams played end-to-end action with no scoring in the second. In the third period Brussels coaching staff made a few changes in their lines and this paid off as Greg Mulvey scored assisted by Shawn Jacklin. At the eight minute mark Kelly Workman scored on a tip-in pass from Greg Mulvey to put Brussels up by two. The fans were treated to excellent hockey in the remaining minutes as Brussels The 3-1 win gives Brussels a one game lead in the best of three series. David Lewington gave Brus­ sels the lead late in the second period when he scored an unassist­ ed goal. Less than two minutes into the third period Shane Wilson scored from Trevor Machan to add to the Brussels margin. Jeff Lew­ ington scored from David Lewing­ ton with 7:39 left in the game to give Brussels an insurmountable lead. Howick ruined the Brussels shut-out bid with just six seconds left in the game for their only goal. EfiMUS BOB TYERMAN 887-6924 R.R. 3, Brussels, Ont. held on to a 3-1 win. Brussels met Chesley in the “B” Championship determined to bring the trophy home for the second year in a row. Chesley dented the twine first and one minute later Don Beuer- mann scored assisted by Brent Evans and Gary Yuill. Eleven seconds later Chesley went ahead only to have Brussels’ Ross Mach­ an score 40 seconds later, assisted by Brett Lee and Shawn Jacklin. Brussels scored the go-ahead goal by Tom Cull with a pass from Brett Lee. Chesley tied the score 50 seconds later to end the second period at 3-3. Greg Mulvey scored in the third assisted by Dan Beuermann and Brett Lee, only to have Chesley reply to tie the score again. Chesley went up two goals but Greg Mulvey brought Brussels within one goal on assists by Dan Beuermann and Darren Johnston. Chesley scored the remaining goal of the game to win the “B” Championship 6-5. The Brussels players played three exciting games with only nine penalties in the three games. Playoff action resumes Wednes­ day, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. when Mildmay will be in town. Brussels leads the series 1-0. All ices were filled with 80 men participating. Winners on the 9 a.m. draw were: first, 52 points Max Oldfield, Blair Dickson, Neil McGavin and Ron Clarkson; second, 43.25 points Ron Kraemer, Marvin Hartwick, Bob Scott and Ken Rolph; third, 39.25 points Stew Steiss, Merv Quipp, Harvey Machan, and Bill and Jim Patterson; fourth, 38 points Bob Blackwell, Harry Scott, Harold Elphich and Jim MacTa- vish. Consolation went to the team of Ross Engel, Bud Ward, Rudy Plugg and Isaac Martin. Winners on the 11 a.m. draw were: first, 50.5 points, Doug Rathwell, Mac Harvey, Ross Veitch and Dale Faucett; second, 44.75 points Gordon Roulston, Ron Fun­ ston, Don Gaunt and Elmer Smelt­ zer; third, 42 points Glen Sellers, Art DeVos, Bill Sellers and Bob Ruttan; fourth 39.75 points Fred Knechtel, David Stevens, Joe Mar­ tin and Ken Elgi. Consolation went to the team of Dan Gascho, Ron Futher, Bill Dowd and James Metcalf. The Overall Trophy winner of the day was the team of Max Oldfield, Blair Dickson, Neil McGavin and Ron Clarkson with 52 points. Jeff Cowan notched Blyth’s first goal in the first period, set up by Michael Haggitt and Darryl Brom­ ley. Blyth took a 2-0 lead in the second period with one goal by Darryl Bromley assisted by Jeff Cowan and Ronnie Abel-Rinn. Goderich battled back scoring one in the third, but could not get the tieing goal on Shane Burkholder, Blyth’s goalie. Greg Blok foiled a breakaway by Goderich in the third, and with the help of Jeff Ferguson and Ronnie Abel-Rinn preserving the win for Blyth. On Saturday, Jan. 21, Blyth played an exhibition game in Teeswater and came home 9-2 winners. Blyth came out flat, and Teeswater outskated and outscored Blyth in the first period 2 to 1. Blyth got their game together in the second and controlled the game to the end. Blyth kid line of Jeff Cowan, Darryl Bromley and Mi­ chael Haggitt, displayed some nice passing combining for eight straight goals. Mark “Sparky” Wilson finished the game on a shot to the top corner for Blyth’s ninth goal, on a pass from Dan Chamney.
