Brian McNichol opened the scor ing as he wristed an unassisted rocket past a startled Zurich goalie. After Zurich tied the game. Chris topher Howson gave Blyth a 2-1 first period lead. He took a pass in the slot from Ryan Chamney and flipped the puck over a fallen goalie. The Bulls ended the period scoring with 33 seconds left on the clock when Rutledge scored on a goal-mouth scramble with assists going to Wheeler and Kieffer. The prettiest goal of the night was scored early in the second as power play marker. Zurich’s hustle and determina tion finally paid dividends as they notched three straight goals to forge ahead 4-3 with time running out. With just under four minutes left in the game Ryan Chamney tied it up as he took the rebound off Jonathan Collin’s shot and scored on a backhand just out of the reach of the sprawled Zurich netminder. Just 58 seconds later Jason Rut ledge counted the winner as he redirected Scott Arthur’s shot through a maze of players. Brian McNichol also earned an assist on Ron Strome went end to end to up the score to 4-0. At this point tne Bulls relaxed and Mitchell fired two quick goals for a 4-2 score. The turning point of the game came when Mitchell was awarded a two-man advantage for 1-39. The penalty-killers held the fort and the Bulls added their fifth goal late in the period - Rutledge from Camp bell and Robertson. the goal as he initiated the scoring drive. Although outplayed by Zur ich the Blyth squad bounced back late to shade Zurich 5-4. Congratulations to the Blyth Atoms who played four penalty free games in the recent Esso Penalty Free Sweepstakes. The team opens the playoffs at home tonight, February 1 against Huron Park, a team that has been hot recently. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Minne sota North Stars goaltender Don Beaupre, when asked if being only 5’8” and 150 pounds created a problem: “I just have to stop the puck, not beat it up.” The Bulls sealed the win with four powerplay goals in the third, two by Rutledge and one each by Fritz and Campbell. Jeff McGavin stopped 35 shots for the win. Sunday afternoon the Bulls were completely humiliated by the Tavi stock Braves 12-3. It’s hard to believe but the opening 25 minutes of play was scoreless before Tavistock explod ed for six goals in the second and added six more in the third. Goalscorers for Brussels were Craig Robertson, Paul Coultes and Bruce Johnston. The Bulls were outshot 48-25 with John Steffler keeping the score as close as it was as Tavistock completely outhustled the juniors from start to finish.
