Sports Bulls drought in Mitchell continues with 5-4 loss Elizabeth Van Loo of RR 2, Wroxeter accepts a $250 gift certificate for a weekend at the Wheels Inn in Chatham from Debbie Sell! of the Brussels Figure Skating Club. She was the lucky winner of the trip in a draw held to raise money for the club. Belgrave Tykes play hard but lose Belgrave Tykes journeyed to Bayfield December 31. Bayfield scored once in first period and once again in the second period. Belgrave failed to score until Peter Irwin netted one with 34 seconds left in the second period. The third period saw both teams continue to play hard with Bayfield scoring with one minute left to play. Tom Pfieffer was the major factor in keeping the score low The final score was Bayfield 3, Belgrave 1. The Belgrave Tyke’s first game in 1989 was in Huron Park, January 7. Novices win The Belgrave Novice Team played an exhibition game in Wingham against the Wingham Nuggets, December 29. These evenly match­ ed teams played hard with Belgrave winning 3-2. Wingham started the scoring in the first period. Belgrave’s Jason Cu rt is assistedby Wayne Fen ton and Ryan Cook tied it up in the second period. The third period saw Ryan Cook score assisted by Wayne Fenton. Wingham tied it up one minute later. Ryan Cook assisted by Peter Irwin scored with three minutes left in the game. December 31 saw the Belgrave Novice in Bayfield. Belgrave’s Wayne Fenton started the scoring in the first period. Bayfield tied it up half-way into the second period. Peter Irwin scored with one minute left in the second period. Belgrave went ahead by two goals when Ryan Cook assisted by Jeremy Campbell and Wayne Fenton scored with four seconds left in the second period. David McBurney scored twice in the third period assisted by Jennifer Black and Luke Lockridge. Defence­ men Michael McBurney and Brian Sinclair helped maintain the play in Bayfield’s end. Forwards Jason Curtis and Vaughn Vincent played another good game. Belgrave came away with a 5-2 win. Bayfield returned to play Bel­ grave January 7. This time Bayfield 2 The Tyke’s defencemen, Tim Robin­ son Matthew Beck, Brian Sinclair and Justin Black were kept busy trying to clear the puck out of their end. Forwards Craig Marks, Justin Campbell, Tyler Fenton, Steven McBurney, Peter Irwin and Curtis Knight tried several rushes up the ice but just couldn’t seem to score. The final tally was Huron Park 11, Belgrave, no score. The Belgrave fans were pleased to see the Tykes play hard all the game, never letting up against a strong Huron Park team. 2, tie 1 came ready to play. David McBur­ ney scored with two minutes to play in the first period. Bayfield scored half-way through the second period and again with three minutes to play in the period. David McBurney tied it up one minute later for Belgrave. The final score was 2-2. Another exciting game for the fans to watch. Overloads unbeaten streak ends The Blyth Radfords Overloads Old timers played two games this past week, both against Clinton teams. The Overloads saw their unbeaten streak broken as they suffered a 6 to 2 set back to the Clinton Foulups. Bruce Bromley and Wayne McDou­ gall scored goals for the Overloads. The Overloads bounced back against the Clinton Colts and were victorious by the score of 9 to 6. Wayne McDougall paced the winn­ ers scoring attack with five goals. Gary Courtney scored twice and singles went to Bryan Black and Bruce Howson. The Overloads’ next game is against the Kincardine Bullshooters at the Blyth arena Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 9 p.m. The Brussels Jr. D. Bulls opened the New Year on a down note, losing by a 5-4 score to the Mitchell Hawks Friday night. The Bulls had no luck in the Mitchell arena this season losing all three games played while being outscored 22-13. The Hawks opened the scoring early in the game only to have Marty Rutledge score the equalizer un­ assisted. Mitchell again took the lead scoring with 25 seconds left in the period and increased their lead to 3-1 byscoringtheonlygoalofthe second frame. The Bulls hit the scoreboard early A week of ties for Brussels Peewees BrusselsPeeWeeswentonthe road for two games last week coming home with a tie in each of them. Thursday night the team travelled to Blyth to play the Belgrave Pee Wees, with Belgrave rallying with two late goals, one with just 29 seconds left in the game, to pull out the tie. Brussels scored all its goals in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the final period. Jeremy Van Keulen led the way, scoring two minutes into Brussels A toms drop Brussels Sprouts game to Huron Park 9ain first win Huron Park handed Brussels “A” Atom team an 8-4 setback in WOAA Atom play in Brussels Friday night. Huron Park built up a two-goal lead before Brussels bounced back to tie the score at the end of the first period. Jeff Lewington scored both goals to tie the score with Trevor Machan and Dave Lewington assist­ ing both times. Trevor Machan’s goal from Jeff Lewington with 9:49 left in the period gave Brussels a brief lead in the second before Huron Park tied the score with less than two minutes left in the period. Christmas Jitney ends at Club The Brussels Curling Club held its annual Christmas Jitney on Decem­ ber 27. There were five ices competing. After curling three six-end games prizes were given to the top teams: first, 50.75 points, Orval Bauer, Yvonne Knight, Rob Veitch and Grant Martin; second, 35.5 points, Brad Speiran, Donna B^iuer, Jeff Knight and Barb Alexander; third, 35 points, Bob Alexander, Rick Knight, Rich Veitch and Bob Steiss; fourth, 34.75 points, Mervyn Bauer, Velma Locking, Brian Alexander and Brent Evans. The consolation went to the team of Fred Smith, Fran Bremner, Marie Stute and Rodney Bauer. The Brussels Curling Club will be holding a Men’s Open Bonspiel on January 23. Milverton defeats Blyth Novices Milverton visited Blyth Sunday in WOAA action and skated home with a 4-2 win. Milverton scored early and built a 3-0 lead before Blyth picked up its first goal in the third peri« Michael Haggitt scored from Marx Wilson and Corey Shannon to get Blyth in the game. But Milverton widened the gap again with only 4:45 left in the game to make Blyth’s task harder. Jeff Cowan scored from Mark Wilson with 46 seconds left but that was all Blyth could manage. in the third scoring twice in the opening three minutes of play, Vincent from Talsma and Rutledge followed by a Rutledge powerplay goal from Strome and Talsma. Mitchell took a4-3 lead but again the Bulls’ powerplay evened the count as Rutledge set up Strome. Mitchell took their final lead of the game with eight minutes remaining and while Brussels had their chances, could not find the game-tying effort. Jeff McGavin played well in taking the loss as Mitchell outshot the Bulls 45-36. The Bulls’ biggest problem the period from Brad Beuermann then scoring with five minutes left in theperiodfrom Chris Stevenson. Those goals were sandwiched around Belgrave’s only goal of the period. With just two seconds left in the period Wayne Alexander gave Brussels an insurance goal on an assist from Daniel Pearson. But that was n’t enough insurance as Bel­ grave bounced back in the third for the tie. Sunday Brussels travelled to With just 16 seconds gone in the third Huron Park took the lead but Brussels bounced back with a goal by Randy Beuermann from Jeff and Dave Lewington to tie the score. The tie lasted only 13 seconds however before Huron Park took the lead for good then added two more goals in less than a minute to salt the game away. They scored the final goal with 1:58 left in the game for an 8-4 margin. Crusaders have 'at home' weekend Brussels Crusaders vyill get plenty of action at home this weekend. Saturday at 8 p. m. the Crusaders will host Seaforth. Sunday at 8 p.m. the team will play host to Wellesley. Game time is 7 p.m. Seaforth and hung on for a 2-2 tie. Seaforth struck early with a goal just 19 seconds into the game but Brussels scored twice to end the period with the lead. Wayne Alex­ ander got the first goal with Daniel Pearson and Brad Beuermann assis­ ting then Ryan Finch scored with an assist from Tim Machan. Seaforth tied the score midway through the second period and the teams were scoreless the rest of the way. Brussels Sprouts, six and seven year olds, picked up their first win of the year January 7 at the home when they defeated Wingham 12-4. Trevor Wilson was a one man scoring machine picking up 11 goals for the home side, five of them unassisted. Darryl Dalton and Mat­ thew McLellan picked up assists on Trevor’s six first period goals. Mike Cooper assisted on one of the two Wilson second period goals. Mike Cooper scored the other Brussels goal in the second. In the third it was Trevor Wilson back for three more goals. Wingham scored one goal in the first, two in the second and one in the third. Earlier the five and six year-old Sprouts were defeated 6-1 by Wingham with Chad Fischer getting Brussels’ only goal in the last three minutes of the game.
