There is a tense attnosphert
around our house these days. I.
is my fault, I started it all, with
the best of intentions.
Recently we celebrated our 24th
.wedding anniversary, .and I want-
ed to give Nora something special
for having put with me for all
those years.
Then I had a hot florin, Nora it
an extremely beautiful girl, so
why not have her portrait paint-
ed, by a first-rate artist, and let
that be our anniversary presoak?'
Throwing caution to the wink.
I telephoned one of Winnipeg's
leading artists, and even before
getting the price of the job (I was
too shy to start out in such a com-
mercial tone with a real live art-
ist), I had "commissioned" him
as they say, to do the portrait.
Nora. was quite thriller,, as I
had hoped she would be, but I had
overlooked one fact. Our house is
full of women-four daughters,
ranging from ten to seventeen,
They are thrilled, too, and the
posturing and preening that goes

I did, get mirror room, I found my-

It's fun-but it ,can be dangerous

If an electric train is to be dis-

The people of Ontario cab save
millions of public dollars in hospi-
tal construction and maintenance
costs if the hospital beds we al-
ready have are wisely used, This is
the theme of a leaflet now being
circulated to the public by the On-
tario Hospital Services Commis-
sion through hospitals and doctors'
offices. The leaflet "Should Mrs.
Brown's operation be delayed by
Mrs, Smith's Wallpaper?? hits out
at thh unthinking people who. ask
to be admitted 'to hospital, or to re-
main; when it is not necessary
medically,
The Commission is hoping to en-
courage members of the general
public to assume some personal re-
sponsibility for avoiding unneces-
sary use of Ontario's hospital beds
and facilities, Reducing the aver-
age length of each patient's stay
by just one day, the leaflet says,
would be like adding about 3,000
extra beds to our present hospitals,
The average length of stay in pub..
lie general hospitals is now ten
days per patient.
The leaflet points out that 3,000
hospital beds cost at least $50 mil-
lion to provide and about $21 mil-
lion every year to maintain. "Mrs.
Smith", in the leaflet has under-
gone surgery and is ready to go
home but wants to stay a couple
more days because her bedroom is
being papered. In the meantime
"Mrs. Brown" requires an opera-
tion but must wait until a bed be-
comes available.
The leaflet tells the public three
ways in which to contribute to ef-
ficient use of hospital beds:
Don't ask your doctor to admit
you to hospital unless he considers
it medically necessary.
Let your doctor decide what ser-
vices you need while you are in
hospital,
Be .prepared to release your bed
for another patient when your
doctor decides you are ready 'to
leave the hospital.
