How to Control Rust
n Upright Juniper
'
notice galls with yellow or
orangelver gelatin-like growths on
your junipers? They usually show
up after rains. If so, your junipers
may have been attacked by cedar-
apple rust, hawthorn rust or quince
rust.
These rusts attack red cedar,
apples, flowering crabs, hawthorn,
and quince. The rusts go from the
juniper to the other plant. The
spores which are blown from the
gelatin-like masses on juniper
cause infection on the other plants.
Then, in late summer, spores pro-
duced on the quince, etc., infect
the juniper, where the rust sur-
vives over the winter. •
Professor C. B. Kelly, botanist
at the O.A.C., .Guelph, suggests
three ways to protect against rust.
Spray crabs and hawthorns with a
ferham -fungicide before and af-
ter they bloom. For small juni-
pers with not too many infections,
cut off the galls before the gela-
tin-like growths Tevelioi. Actidione
has shown promise in preventing
the galls 'on juniper from producing
the spores which -cause the infec-
tion. It comes in spray or tab-
let form. Apply the actidione as
a spray in the spring ;before the
gelatin-like tendrils develop. With
tablets, make a mixture to give 100
parts of actidione per 1,000,000
parts of water -by weight, Look at
the manufacturer's directions for
the right size tablet..
It's a poor plan to plant juni
pers near apples, crabs, haWthorns
or quince. Plant them on the op-
posite side of the house, or with a
tall windbreak in between.
