For pleasant outdoor living this summer
piece. It is of an odd character,
as are many of John Wain's crea-
tures. It however is satisfying be-
cause, of the basic honesty and in-
tegrity of the central character.
This is •not an exciting hook--in
fact I took three runs at one of
the stories before I completed it.
The others, I might say, captured
my attention instantly and held
me until I had read them to the
end, His observation is of a world
beyond the confines of one sense.
Summer reading? Yes, indeed.

NUNCEE AND OTHER STORIES
by John Wain
is ideal for summer reading. The
final and longest story in the book
provides the title. It is a long
short story and could almost be a
novel when one considers its scope
and material. John Wain is a
young (under 40) English writer.
This is his first volume of short
stories--I hope not his last. Pre-
viously he has written novels, po-
etry, essays and hook reviews.
Two of the stories have as their
central figure a child. "Master
Richard" is a chilling account of
hallucination. In "A Message from
the Pig-Man" we have terror en-
gendered by an active imagination
but of a, more natural, and eradic-
able type, His perception of the
inner reality of people is keen; nu-
ances of feeling are cleverly indi-
egttorhj, the fine precision of his
writing and his careful use of
words. One of the stories is an
innpient-appearing address to a
learned society. It, too, deals with
a state of visionary imagination
but is relieved by a lovely tongue-
in-cheek humour. There are fine
flashes of subtle humour amid most
of his writing. "Christmas at Ril-
linghams" alone is light and dia-
bolically amusing, especially at the
end,
"Rillingham", is that not a typic-
ally English name? To digress, I
should like to quote a portion of
the mental soliloquy of a political
refugee at an English cocktail par-
ty . . . 'Names, names; solid rec-
tangular English names that plop
heavily out of the mouth and fall
to the floor. One imagines them
lying there like wooden bricks for-
gotten by a child. All English
names sound like John Blomp and
their women's names like Susan
Blusan, Or Anne Gram. My name,
curling off the tongue like a suc-
cession of whip-cracks in a brave
circus ring, sounds ridiculous to
these people-. Worse, it sounds ri-
diculous to me. I feel like an im-
poster who has invented a fancy
name for himself . . . "
By and large these are stories
of the mind and emotion but even
the emotion is measured and ana-
lyzed. Action is compartively
slight. The life depicted is un-
mistakably English and as such
I find it interesting. It is not ne-
cessary to decide for or against
our way or the English way. It is
fun however to note the contrasts
in pace, accommodation and stand.
ards.
The story "Nuncle" is a master-
