I N n U U U U U N U U U U U N CALLING TENDERS FOR MENTAL HOSPITAL Public Works Minister Ray Con- nell and Charles MacNaughton, MPP, for Huron, have announced calling -of tenders for construction of a new mental hospital at God- erich. Construction of the first stage, which comprises accommoda- tion for 300 ,patients, plus services for future expansion, Will be start- ed this fall' and carried on through the winter to provide employment for many tradesmen in the district. Cost of the first stage of con- struction of this hospital is esti- mated at about $3,500,000. However, Mr. Connell pointed out that many of the costs included in this figure, including the laundry, power plant, administrative wing and sewage system, would not be repeated when future additions are made. Mr. Connell said there will not be one "long corridor" in the whole building, a break from traditional institutional architecture. Instead there will be single storey "cot- tages" with two two-storey wings. There will be a minimum of re- striction of patients. Easy access will be provided to two enclosed courtyards from the small wards. Doors wil also open directly from wards to the grounds which form a choice site on 'Lake 'Huron, about two and a. half miles south of Goderich on No. 21 Highway. The site includes 3,000 feet of lake frontage and is almost one mile deep. Mr. MacNaugton, who is a mem- ber of the Ontario Water Resources Commission, said arrangements had been made with the town of God- erich to extend mains to provide water when the institution is ready. A 250;000 gallon tank will store water for hospital use and a boost- er pump will provide pressure for fire hydrants. First sewage ar- rangements will be treatment in a six-acre lagoon at the southern ex- tremity of the large property, but future -plans include a cost-sharing construction of a sewage treatment plant that will serve both the town and the hospital, Mr. Connell described part of the hospital as being, in, effect, an in- termediary :between a -home for 'the aged and the popular concept of a, mental 'hospital for tha , aged, Pa tients whose marital' raCulties 'have deteriorated beydaild the point where they could look after „themselves in a home for ;thee.aged'eayet do not need full-time bed care or protection from themselves, would constitute the bulk 'of the patients. The hospital would also serve the mental health needs of all adults in the area, The emphasis is on treatment throughout. 'Domestic pastel shades in intermr•decor, with extensive use of glass, provision for More day rooms and more recreational facili- ties, will create a home-like atmos- phere. Use of bright colored vinyl tile flooring throughout will reduce noise •and add to the cheery ali- pearance. The administration area will be a central two-storey block, and will include the active treatment wing, kitchen and dining room sections, an auditorium, occupational ther- apy and chapels. The infirmary section will include male and fe- male patient wings and a third section will provide services such as laundry, trades mid power plant. A small garage will also be built.
