Indeed they are -being planned as family rooms where not only cook- ing and eating takes place but a good deal of recreation goes on. Very often, in some of the newer homes, the kitchen is placed in the central part of the' house and is open onto the major living areas. This of course demands color har- mony with these adjoining areas. Although major equipment and cabinets come in modular units with basic finishes and shapes it is possible to absorb them into any decorative plan front traditional to a "glimpse of tomorrow." Xitehen interiors in 1960 will draw on a wide range of natural and man- made materials to make them unique. Stone, wood and the plas- tics are examples, We introduce the personal elements when we select and use fabrics, wallpapers, accessories, lighting fixtures and floor coverings with decorative im- agination. Invention and design are-bringing new ease and beauty„to the kitchen. The kitchen's face is - changing. There are changing color panels.for appliances and some cupboard doors. Where once the edges % and corners of appliances were 'round ed and bulged the right angle is prevalent, Wonderful space saving cooking units have been introduced which were installed 'at the hack of counter tops and they fold back flat against he wall when not in use, There 'is no reason 'to beware of the unconventional in kitchen decora- tion, Anything—so long as it meets practical requirements—goes. Completely away from the clini- cal look is a kitchen that takes on a traditional feeling. One that I saw recently had a rustic, country look that it had achieved with the use of cabinets that were designed after the French provincial style. The major appliances, completely functional and practical were in a soft pink. A matching fabric and wallpaper had been selected to in- corporate the pink and set the color scheme of the room. Its de- sign was appropriate for the period and the colors were beige 'back- ground, with pink, red and dark brown. The floorcovering was a vinyl corlon and had a spatter design in all the colors that were to he found in the wallpaper. As a background and to give in- terest to the cabinets, which were finished in a rich fruitwood, this wallpaper had been placed on the walls above and below them. An Cantaloupes at modern produce counters are sweet, but they may need two or three days at room temperature to develop juiciness. Normal summer heat will soften them nicely. The smart thing is to anticipate your melon appetite and buy your melon supply several days before eating. While the cantaloupe is only one member of the big muskmelon family, it's the most important, for we eat about one and a quarter billion pounds of this small, heav- ily netted melon annually. Don't over-chill your cantaloupe; you will lose some of its musky bou- quet that way. An hour in the re- frigerator is about enough. Scrape seeds out, but don't rinse the melon because water floods away some of the sweet juice. Cantaloupe is a treat at any time of day—breakfast, lunch, dinner or a between-meal snack.. It's ,mar- velously healthful and very low in added warm touch was the copper hood over the stove and for an accent a collection of cranberry glass was aisplayed In on one of the cabinets which had a glass front. Appropriate accessories and lighting fixtures had been thosen with 'care and seemed 'to finish off this delightfully 'decorated, ever so livable kitchen, Newlyweds Honored in Wroxeter Hall FORDWICH—A presentation and dance was held in Wroxeter com- munity hall on Friday night in honor of 'Mr. and Mrs. David Stein- acher,, newlyweds, of Fordwich.
