Are the door hinges self-closing? Is the

such as carousels or other systems that
:liminate dead areas and maximize storage

Is the cabinet reasonably priced: in other'
words. does it combine the quality you
want with what your pocketbook can
handle?
One aspect that often gets overlooked in
planning a kitchen says Mr. McKee, is one
that comes free: light. The national
building code says the window area should
he 10 per cent of the floor area of the room.
Mr. McKee :.eels it should be closer to 20
per cent of the floor area. A kitchen should
he bright and cheerful. he says. He has an
old saying that a dark kitchen and a cross
wife go hams in hand. A wife working
under the most clteerful conditions is much
more likely to be a cheerful person he says.
One of the things Mr. McKee urges most
is to plan carefully and take your time. He
says his firm does a number of renovation
jobs every year on homes that are only a
year old. People don't look close enough at
what they're buying when they buy a house
and don't like what they've got once they
move in and try to use it. If you're buying a
house. he suggests look the place over, go
away and think about it a week then look
the place over. If you've got the time think
some more and look the place over a third
time before buying.
Although he doesn't say so, the same
could be said for planning your new
kitchen. Look around. See what's
available. Check the quality and plan in
advance what you want before you buy
then go to a reputable dealer. ❑
