Village Squire, 1979-06, Page 12James Murphy leads the Huron Country Playhouse into its
eighth season. His dream of a classic Straw Hat summer theatre
on the shores of Lake Huron has become a success. It is now one
of the largest theatres of its type in Ontario.
A few behind -the -scene changes will take place in 1979. Mr.
James Murphy, founder of the Playhouse, recently announced
his resignation as Playhouse Artistic Director and General
Manager, effective at the end of this season.
Miss Aileen Taylor -Smith has been named Artistic Director.
while Mr. Marc Quinn has been appointed General Manager;
they will assume their positions in November. Miss Taylor -Smith
is already known to Playhouse audiences as an actress, and Mr.
Quinn, a recent graduate of Waterloo University, has been
associated with the Playhouse as Director of Operations since
May.
Fund-raising events in 1979 will include a Monte Carlo night
plus a dinner and dance. In addition, the Third International Art
Auction will be held at the Huron Country Playhouse on Sunday
July 29. Convener of the auction will be Mr. Glen Wood, an
innovative designer and developer. Mr. Wood is renowned for
his renovations of historical buildings, including the Talbot Inn.
London, and the Festival Square, Stratford.
In 1979, the Subscription Committee for the Huron Country
Playhouse has undertaken an ambitious campaign to attain the
highest number of subscription holders in Playhouse history.
Mr. Bert Albertson, Chairman of the committee, described
subscribers as "the back bone of the theatre. And in an
important way, they are part of the theatre they patronize. It is
their support of the whole season of plays that determines the
quality of the productions. Subscribers can be proud of their
theatre and know that they contribute to its excellence."
Ms. Charla Black, Publicity Director for the Playhouse. added,
"Support from the surrounding communities gives inspiration to
the work of all the theatre artists who work on each production."
The success of the Huron Country Playhouse in the past eight
years has been due, in large part, to the enthusiasm of the
people involved and to the interest and support of neighbouring
communities. This enthusiasm and support promises to bring
another season of quality theatre entertainment to Southwestern
Ontario in 1979.
