Well known for his courageous battle against the forces of evil, Chief McGillicuddy has agreed to give exclusive rights to his diary to Village Squire ... for a princely sum of course. Each month we publish a selection of entries from the previous month. MARCH 5: Boy what fun they're having with Maggie "The Mouth" Trudeau. That girl has more stories to tell than Readers Digest. Every day the papers are filled with some new tale. If the girl really did everything she's supposed to have done, she'd have to be about 82... or at least she'd look it. Ah we've had our own scandals in town though. There was the time the Mayor went down to the Good Roads Convention in Toronto. Councillor Sally Hemple had said she wasn't going to go down to such a disgusting, degrading event as that convention. She'd heard tales of it before, she said. But she just happeded to be in the city at the time and decided to slip down for one of the seminars. Well when she got there. the Mayor was nowhere in sight. so she went looking for him. She finally found him by the pool with a beautiful young woman in a very skimpy bathing suit. The Mayor must have been over -exerting himself in the swimming pool because when Sally walked up to him, his face was bright red. He was just visiting his niece here, he told Sally. Well Sally must have been in one of her better moods because for once she wasn't seeing the worst in every situation although she did read the Mayor a lecture later on about letting his young niece be seen in public in such a disgusting outfit. The trouble really came at church the next Sunday when Sally walked up to the Mayor and Mrs. Lumpy and mentioned how nice it was to meet the Mayor's niece in Toronto at the convention. If she thought the Mayor had a red face before, she hadn't seen anything yet. MARCH 15: The snow's melting really nicely these days. It's so nice to get rid of it all and discover that there really is earth under all that, even if it does mean sinking ankle deep in mud for a couple of weeks. It wasn't mud that Mary Filmore was unhappy about however. Things have been kind of quiet between Mary and her cats and Howard Hillman and his dogs next door over the winter. I guess I knew it couldn't last. Tis spring again and this potter starts to think of plant pots, jardinieres, hanging planters and all things anew.
