UP FRONT
With the coming of spring, spirits rise and the urge to do
things around the house increases. It may mean something u
small as rearranging all the living room furniture and doing
spring housecleaning or it could mean something big like
building a new house.
What better time to look at new ideas (or old ones) in homes
and home decorating in Western Ontario. Elaine Townshend
visited a Lucknow area couple who are beating the energy crunch
with solar heating. They have designed and built their own house
to utilize to its fullest the inexpensive energy sources.
Western Ontario has always been a major centre for the
production of furniture. Many of the big names in the industry
are located in centres like Stratford and Hanover. There are
some lesser known names around too but names that produce top
quality produce. Fabian furniture in Clinton is perhaps ahead of
its time. Using a process invented and developed by the Fabian
family they have come up with a mass manufactured method that
may produce stronger furniture than that even of the old
hand-crafted days.
Bob and Bill Wallace of Maitland Woodworking in Fordwich
have gone in the opposite direction. returning to the days when
furniture was built in small shops by craftsmen. They have found
that many people want to return to that time.
In our cover story this month we talk to CFPL television
personality Jim Swan. For many years a member of the staff of
CKNX radio and television in Wingham, Swan left for the big
city of London two years ago and Morning Break has been
building higher audience ratings ever since.
An important new regional book was issued last month with
the long-awaited release of Thelma Coleman's history of The
Canada Company. We have a review on that.
A top Canadian actor -director has been named the new artistic
director of the Blyth Summer Festival for the 1980 season. We
have the details in Update.
And there are our dining listings and entertainment listings
and many other enjoyable tidbits.
NEXT MONTH
Writer. geneologist, historian. scientist, Anglican priest; Orlo
Miller has lived enough for several lives. If he doesn't write his
autobiography, no doubt someone will be writing stories about
him in future years just as he now digs interesting characters out
of our history. We have an interview with him.
Wingham will be celebrating its centennial this year starting
off with a play about its history. We'll have an article on the
founding and history of Wingham.
