the customer's specifications.
Fitting is the most difficult part of designing, says Diana: "To
fit someone properly, you have to know what you're doing."
Men's shirts require a lot of time, and men's suits are perhaps
the most difficult garments to make because tailoring is an art in
itself. •
Diana also received many requests to alter ready-made
clothes. For altering, you have to "change gears," she explains.
Sometimes it's disturbing to have to interrupt work on a major
garment to hem a pair ofpants, but Diana realizes there is a need
for altering as well as for other types of sewing.
A person, has to pay a little more to have a garment made than
to buy one off the rack, because a designer invests a certain
amount of time, in study and experience, to develop her skills to
the point she feels she can sell them. The advantage to the
customer is a garment designed specifically for her.
In the future, she hopes to build up a regular clientele in
Goderich and area. and she would like to make more wedding
ensembles.
"Weddings are fun," she says, "because you can do more
with them than you can with street clothes."
But she admits it's difficult to convince girls to have their
gowns made, unless a designer becomes krrown for doing it. "1
can describe how the garment will look, but ft's hard for them to
visualize it," she adds.
She would also like a chance to help other people decorate
their homes. because she enjoyed the experience with her own.
Besides sewing. Diana is adept at dyeing fabrics and enjoys
crafts, such as macrame, knitting and crocheting.
"When you can sew." she says. "it's fairly easy to pick up
other crafts." She doesn't claim to be as proficient at a certain
craft as someone who has specialized in it for years. but she has a
certain amount of confidence in .her ability and she enjoys the
work.
Whether she's designing. sewing or decorating, Diana Scott
draws from experience and adds enthusiasm.
Spring things
When the winds of March do howl and blow
Bringing lashing rains or swirling snow
1 wonder if Spring will ever be here
Even though it's the right time of the year.
The snowdrops raise their dainty head
The robins with their breasts so red
Chirp from dawn till almost dark
Accompanied by sparrow, crow and lark.
The farmer starts to plow the ground
The frog makes an eerie, erotic sound
The beaver starts to build his dam
The ewe gives birth to a dear little lamb
The daffodils and tulips of palest hues
The scented hyacinths of pinks and blues
Blooming and blowing till on in May
All harbingers of Spring are they
Children with ropes do skip and play
Glad to be out in the lengthening day
Lovers stroll with arms entwined
Organ grinders start to grind
Music soft and music gay
Sun has a much warmer ray
All nature has its own special way
To say Spring is here, and here to stay
