What will fashion -conscious men and women in Western
Ontario be wearing this spring and summer? Local shop owners
preview the coming trends.
THE LOOK FOR WOMEN
The over-all look for women in 1979 will be soft and feminine,
according to Valerie Dale proprietor of Val's Fashion Fare in
Blyth.
Dresses and blouses in sheer polyester will feature softly
gathered waists for a tall slim effect. Polka dots and small
feminine prints will be popular. Full-length gowns will be
replaced by mid-calf length and cocktail length (below the knee).
Black, an unusual colour for spring, will be strong along with
pastels.
A wide variety of skirts will be seen ranging from the full
"Annie Hall" to straighter skirts with slits. The length will be
slightly shorter than last year's line, and cotton skirts will
replace jeans. Pant suits will have their place, but skirts and
blazers will be seen more often.
Although some camp -style coats will be shown, most coats will
be fitted with tie belts and single-buttons;(that is not
double-breasted). Natural and beige tones will be shown as well
as red, navy and blue.
"This is the year for accessories," adds Valerie Dale,
"everything from belts, scarves and gloves."
Hats are slowly coming back into prominence from tams to
wide brimmed hats and peaked hats. Handbags range from
over -the -shoulder bags in compact sizes to clutch bags and disco
bags.
Valerie Marshall of Marshall's of St. Marys says leather
handbags are gradually being replaced by Tess expensive
synthetic bags in a wide range of colours from white, bone and
camel to brown, navy and red. Canvas and corduroy tote bags in
red, white and blue will continue to be popular.
