Village Squire, 1979-02, Page 30be quick and inventive.
Gray has produced his best work so far
with Billy Bishop. The story, lyrics and
music are all better than his earlier popular
effort 18 Wheels, the musical about
truckers that has had a large number of
productions in the past couple of years. His
use of piano and microphone to provide
sound effects is inventive and outstanding.
Paul Williams' set is a large step upward
over the usual sets for shows touring to
small centres across Canada. Making use
of sheer materials, a window blind effect
and a huge paper -roll backdrop he provides
a setting that is one moment serene,
almost delecate and the next is in the
middle of the war zone.
And that seems to suit the play exactly.
One minute you're laughing at the exploits
of Bishop and his buddies or army
officialdom and the next moment you're
struck to silence by the actualities of the
war.
The show has proven to be the best thing
to happen to Gray and the Petersons in a
long time. After its success it went on to
Saskatoon for two weeks. After finishing
its Ontario tour with a stay from February
8-12 at Aeloian Hall in London it will move
on to Toronto for a stay at Theatre Passe
Muraille. But it won't end there. Already
an extensive Canadian tour to various
regional theatres has been set up for next
year meaning there is something unheard
of in the wind for these theatrical gypsies:
security. They deserve it as much as
audiences deserve the chance to see this
excellent production to be entertained and
enlightened about a Canadian hero.

Hockey as a parable
There are two great myths in Canadian
society: history is dull and hockey is
exciting. So the obvious came to playwright
Rick Salutin: make a play about hockey that
is really a parable for history.
The result is Les Canadiens, a play that
combines the history of the Montreal
Canadiens, the most successful hockey
team in history with the history of Quebec
and the frustrations of the Quebecois in 200
years trying to escape the feeling of being a
conquered people.
The combination has won high praise
and a little financial success for Salutin. It
was first produced at Montreal's English-
language Centaur Theatre in early 1977,
barely months after the election of the Parti
Quebecois on Nov. 15, 1976. That evening,
becomes the climatic event of the play.
Last year the production moved on to
Toronto where Toronto Workshop Produc-
tions made it the hit of the Toronto season.
Salutin won the Chalmers award for the

NOTICE TO
HOMEOWNERS
The Federal Government, due to the energy crisis in Canada, has
recognized the WESTINGHOUSE HEAT PUMP as an
energy-saving device. Tests on existing homes have shown time and
again that the Heat Pump System alone or added to the existing
heating system, saves a considerable amount of money. On a recent
test, in a 2,100 square foot, 4 bedroom backsplit home, the normal
yearly heating expense was $527. When the WESTINGHOUSE
HEAT PUMP was added, the yearly heating expense dropped to
$288....A remarkable saving of 45°0
The reason the WESTINGHOUSE HEAT PUMP is so efficient is
because, unlike other systems, it does not create the heat but merely
takes the existing heat from the outside air, [yes there is heat
outside even in the winter], and transfers it to the inside of your
home. Only using supplemental heat as required on really cold days.
Why is this system so effective?...Let's take an example. Electric
resistance heating operates at 100% efficiency. [All energy used is
converted to heat to heat your home, no heat goes up the chimney as
with fuel systems.] At an outdoor temperature of 40 degrees F,
electric resistance heating produces 3,413 BTU's of heat per
kilowatt hour of electricity input. The WESTINGHOUSE HEAT
PUMP returns up to 8,533 BTU's of heat per kilowatt hour of
electricity or...250°r% efficiency...
Now this is all very technical, but you can easily see how the
WESTINGHOUSE HEAT PUMP, even compared to the most
efficient heating system, comes way out on top. Fuel heating
systems are considered 50 to 80% efficient.
What does this mean to you as a homeowner:
- considerable savings now and in the future on heating.
-an investment in the heating system of the future.
-dean fresh air heating.
-by merely reversing the heat pump you cool your home in the
summer.
- satisfaction of knowing that you won't be stuck with an obsolete
fuel system when the fuel runs out.
- satisfaction of knowing that you are doing your part to conserve
energy.
It is impossible, in this Ad, to explain or show you the
WESTINGHOUSE HEAT PUMP. But by merely dropping us a note
