some of the handcrafted pieces visitors can
see made from start to finish.

Glass Country is easy to reach by car
from any direction, and Pittsburgh makes
an idea starting point for a tour. East of the
city is Grapeville, home of Westmoreland
Glass, famous for floral designs handpaint-
ed on crystal and milk glass.
Traveling southwest, you reach Mount
Pleasant, home of Lenox Crystal. There is
no factory tour here, but you can visit the
gift shop for handblown lead crystal.
L.E. Smith Glass Company, known for
its handpressed pieces like punchbowls
and goblets in the century -old moon and
star pattern, is also in Mount Pleasant.
Continuing south into Weston, West
Virginia, visitors can watch glass blowers
at work at the West Virginia Specialty
Company, featuring handblown barware
and gift pieces.
Visitors to the 10 glass houses in West
Pennsylvania and Ohio can see craftsmen
handcrafted glass and can purchase objects
and contemporary designs. For information,

Handblown oversized bottles. vases and
intricately designed paperweights are
made at Blenko Glass, southwest, in
Milton.
Viking Glass Company. located in
Huntington. west of Milton. is noted for
handblown bottles and pitchers in ruby and
"krackle" glass.
More contemporary items such as
decanters and food containers are made at
Pilgrim Glass Corporation. in Ceredo near
the Kentucky -West Virginia border.
Animals and figurines are also formed by
hand by the skilled glassmakers here.
Bordering the Ohio River is Williams-
town, where Fenton Art Glass creates the
satin. milk and rose Burmese glass prized
by collectors.
North of here is New Martinsville. where
another Viking factory features handpress-
ed baskets and delicately etched crystal as
well as an assortment of decorative designs
in colorful finishes.
The Last stop on the Glass Country tour is
Imperial Glass in Bellaire, Ohio. Here you
will find colored handpressed glass and
authentic early American reproductions.
Travelers can find reasonable accom-
modations throughout the Glass Country
area, in historic inns or modern hotels.
The area also offers several local
museums which give visitors a taste of the
rich history of this popular section of the
country.
