Art, some people will tell you, particularly m this time of
economic turmoil. is an expensive frill. Federal arts grant
cutbacks at present show the belief of this by politicians and the
support of the general public for the cutbacks shows that a
sizeable proportion of the population agrees.
Yet for a goodly number of people art in one form or another is
an essential part of life. This month we meet two people who are
working hard to meet this need in themselves or others. Ernie
King has had a long career in music, particularly country and
‘:estern music. in Western Ontario. Now he wants to help
younger musicians and in doing so has come up with an exciting
contribution a recording studio designed for lesser-known
performers.
Maurice Darling is a man who after years of doing other
things. has decided to take a chance on doing what he really
wants to do:_ paint. He's opened Darling Studio in Wroxeter to
give his own work and that of others greater exposure.
The Farmers Almanac is part of the culture of all rural areas.
Like most things part of our culture, for a long time this was
imported. But recently things have looked up. We now have our
own Canadian Farmers Almanac and it's published right in our
own back yard. in Milverton.
Often people are upset with the school system but tew people
do more than complain. But in Stratford area a small group of
parents have decided to do something about it. Elaine
Townshend visited the school.
One of Canada's best known writers is a resident of Western
Ontario and she has recently released her latest book. Alice.
Munro's Who Do You Think You Are? is reviewed and just may
be her best book yet.
And there is much more.
