27 years in harness racing brings
honours to Mitchell man
BY ELAINE TOWNSHEND
"Harness racing is a disease that gets
into your blood," claims 67 year-old
Gordon Fawm of Mitchell.
As he reminisces about his 27 years of
training, driving and breeding trotters. it
becomes apparent he didn't need a cure.
His father, E.W. Fawm, was prominent
in harness racing around Mitchell. and his
grandfather and an uncle were blacksmiths
in Seaforth and Stratford. It seemed
natural for Gordon to "grow into" a
horse -related business.
During the 1930's and 1940's, he
operated a garage in St. Marys, but still

drove to Mitchell to help with the horses.
In the early 40s. his father contemplated
selling a filly named Edna McKillop
because she shoved little promise. Gordon
persuaded his father to lend him a cart and
let him try training her. He used a
quarter -mile track at St. Marys and recalls
installing lights that cost 98 cents a month
to burn.
The long hours of training paid off v: hen
Edna McKillop won the futurity for
two-year olds in 1944 and was undefeated
as a two-year-old. As a three-year-old. she
was the largest money -winning filly in
Canada.
