Village Squire, 1978-11, Page 34•come v:hen he calls. he gets out of bed and comes to get you! Climbing over the frame wasn't too hard a task but i was barely over the other side and on the mattress %:hen I remembered that 1 get terribly seasick at the least feeling of motion and believe me. there was motion! Ever lov:er...lbs. onto a v.ater bed. turn. gist. and adjust for comfort? You wouldn't believe the motion! The sinking of the Titanic didn't produce as many v:aves as me lowering my pleasingly plump (remember?) self onto the ill-fated water bed. What a situation to be in...a queasy stomach and not a soda cracker in sight...two grandchildren who would now: probably awaken (ever see it fail?)...my sudden awareness that -the weight of my body had displaced and I do mean displaced. enough v: ater so that I had sunk v.-ell in. making the frame around the bed look. from my prone position. like a 6 ft. fence. How to climb over? I could just barely see Babbi and Fergus' faces peering at me from their resting positions on the floor at the foot end of the bed. Diddetect a look of challenge in their canine eves. or was it simply a we knew you'd be sorry you ever got in" look? Whatever. I decided to ignore them and try to get out. Surely there must be a way or was there? I turned. facing the side of the bed and immediately had a vision of waves v: ashine me to shore. which in this case was the frame. I wasn't to be disappointed. The sudden movement pushed me right up against it. Two pairs of eyes noted my progress (was I progressing or .was I going to be lodged between the mattress and the frame?) They waited. peering in the near dark. Did`I, detect a note of contempt? I'd show them! I swung my legs over the side and sat up. Pain. intense pain!'! The frame was pressing into the inside back of my knees while my posterior was sinking deeper into the brink. I turned and using my 10 fingers as levers. I pressed into the mattress. hoping to elevate myself into a half-standing position from which my feet would finally hit the floor. but no luck. The pain in the back of my knees was now getting excrutiating. A sudden brainwave made me reach for a pillow to tuck under my legs. between them and the Fall books are arriving daily: Berton, Don Harron and all the most wanted authors.
