Village Squire, 1978-11, Page 31a week. His firm were getting more and more mural assignments, and one of these was becoming the talk of the town. "Bands of Angels" depicted a series of ravishing, scantily clad blondes in various poses, each accompanied by a small brown cupid aping the gestures of the larger companion. They were witty and often sharply satyrical. In that stretch of more than three years since we first met, 1 never saw Willie with a girl, nor did the wife to whom he still made casual references ever appear with him. Then it happened. It was a hot July day that badgered one to take French leave and head somewhere, anywhere out of the 32° heat with its humidity to match. "Let's call it quits for the day," suggested Willie." and I'll take you up to King for a swim and to meet my wife. I've been planning for ages to ask you up, but the job just seems to get more demanding and a fellow has to make it while he can." "Fine." Less than an hour later we were turning into Whitaker's driveway. The mini -estate spoke clearly of the success of its owner. The car was not air-conditioned but the house was and what a relief it was to step into the cool of the livingroom. There was no one to greet us and as two tall cool ones were poured at the bar, 1 prepared to hear a neat white lie to explain the absence of the non-existant wife. As we sipped our drinks, I began to wonder if the angels in the murals were the visible extention of the dreams of a lonely man who would never come any closer to feminine companionship. We finished our drinks. Whitaker rose and beckoned to me. "Let's go find my wife and Junior." We moved out to the well landscaped rear of the property through a pair of French doors and out onto a raised patio. "Ho! Brawn in, Ho! Billy Boy," he shouted in his deep bass". A moment later there appeared along a gravel path that lead into a bit of shrubbery that evidently concealed a pool, a small chubby lad, naked as the day he was born and dripping wet*He was followed a moment later by one of the most ravishing women 1 ever set eyes en. My host turned to me gravely. "I am her eyes. and she ---- There was no need to finish.
