PAUL BENNETT TO HEAD
GALLERY STRATFORD
The search for a successor to Robert
Swain as director of Gallery Stratford
ended recently with the hiring of Paul
Bennett of Toronto.
Mr. Bennett will take over his duties in
mid-October. He has been working in the
visual arts for his entire career which
began as a high school teacher and
continued as an art advisor to the
Community Programmes Branch of the
Ontario Department of education. He was
director of the Art Institute of Ontario from
1964 to 1968 and was awarded a Canada
Council Visual Arts grant in 1968. After
studying exhibition extension programs
and training for museum and gallery
personnel in Europe and New York, he
returned to Canada to become director of
the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa.
He has been the executive director of the
Canadian Guild of Crafts for the past six
years. The organization merged with the
Ontario Craft Foundation in 1976 to form
the Ontario Crafts Council.
This background, he said, could mean
the gallery will give more emphasis to
"quality, contemporary crafts," though he
added that there is no intention to make it
into a crafts gallery.
