Continue to the east on Huron County 4.
Watch for the turn off road to Huron Park
on your right and take it into the old
Centralia Air Base now better known as the
residential and industrial complex of
Huron Park, made notorious in recent
months by the Fleck strike. At one time a
tour of the complex would have been akin
to a guided tour of the Vietnam war but
thankfully there has been little violence
recently. Still there are enough police in
the area that you'd better make sure not to
break any laws.
From Huron Park it's just a short jaunt to
the south to the village of Centralia itself.
From Centralia, head north (left) on
Highway 4. Exeter provides the next
attraction and if you're in the mood for
some shopping, you'll find your chance
here. There's a growing number of
interesting small shops as well as the usual
selection of stores to supply local needs.
There's also a nice park area towards the
northern part of the town which provides a
nice place to stop and stretch your legs or
have a picnic.
North again and we come to Hensall, and
if you're travelling in a small motor home,
it may just have come from here. The Targe
Bendix plants in the village turn out both
mobile homes and motor homes for the
Canadian market.
Hensall is also the centre of the white
bean district and huge elevators which
store and clean the beans dominate the
skyline at Hensall Co-op, W.J. Thompson
Ltd. and Cook's. For a town so surrounded
by farming country. this is a heavily
industrialized town.
Along the main street you'll find more
reasons to shop including an excellent bake
shop.
Hensall is also home to one of the largest
agricultural publishing companies in the
country Agri -Press which is located on the
main street near the railway tracks. It's
also, of course, the sight of the annual
fiddle and step dancing competition that
packs in huge crowds every June.
We head west of the village again on
Highway 84 back through the flatlands
toward the lake. Just west of Hensall is the
Pineridge Chalet, a popular winter
vacation spot.
Our next stop is the village of Zurich and
it will be a popular spot later this month
when it welcomes thousands to the annual
Zurich Bean Festival, one of the biggest
examples of mass gluttony in the land.
Every year thousands of people descend
on the town to devour hundreds of pounds
of baked beans and all the trappings.
West from Zurich we head on toward the
lake until we reach the junction of Highway
21 at St. Joseph's, then turn left. There has
been a great deal of developing along the
lake in recent years with whole new
communities begun.
We pass by one of the favourite stopping
points for tourists the Bayview tavern,
right across from the Bayview golf course
and then pass on into Grand Bend, past
another golf course Oakwood and the
Oakwood Inn. And you're back where you
started and can go back to oggling all those
scantily clad bodies on the beach. ❑
