Exploring southern Huron,
s,nlancl from Grand Bend
From the north, in Bruce county last
month, we head to the south, in south
Huron this month. If you're a fan of the
hill -and -valley terrain of Bruce, you might
be a little disappointed this time out in the
flat -lands of south Huron but there is still
plenty of interesting things to see.
If you like scenery of a different sort, you
can't find a much better place than Grand
Bend on a summer afternoon and that's
where we start our trip. The famous Grand
Bend beach and the main street leading to
the beach are colourful and interesting
places during the busy summer season.
Some people may just not want to leave to
tour inland.
The trip starts by heading north out of
Grand Bend on Highway 21, the famous
Bluewater Highway. At the north end of
the village near the giant water plant, turn
right onto Highway 83 towards Dashwood
and Exeter.
As we mentioned, the land is nearly flat
inland from the lake which makes it ideal
for today's large-scale farming operations
and this is one of Ontario's richest farming
areas.
Gerrard's
One of the most interesting of the
smaller villages is the first we'll visit,
Dashwood. The Dashwood Hotel on the
main corner is a landmark. Down the street
further is the former home of the industry
that helped put this village on the map.
Dashwood Industries, the manufacturer of
windows and other building products has
now moved over to a Highway 4 location
near Centralia but the old home has a new
tenant. gaining a reputation of its own. The
new occupant is Arc Industries which helps
the handicapped learn useful crafts and
trades. The plant produces many crafts and
wood products which can be bought at the
plant. (For a full story on Arc Industries
see the June Village Squire).
After touring around the village to
explore. turn south (right) on Huron
County Road 2. At the south end of the
village is another business that makes
many people travel to Dashwood, the
Merner's Meats outlet offering a custom
butchering service which has proved
popular.
Travel south again until you come to the
corner of Huron County Road 4. then turn
left (east). The next stop is the village of
Crediton. Crediton is smaller than
Dashwood and provides a contrast in what
can happen to the villages that are
by-passed by major transportation routes,
compared to those which are on such
routes.
