Village Squire, 1978-07, Page 21to touch the exhibits and see how they work. From Toronto, Highway 2 hugs the shore of Lake Ontario, goes through the car manufacturing city of Oshawa, the old Loyalist town of Cobourg and on to the fortress city of Kingston, located at the junction of Lake Ontario and the Saint Lawrence River. Kingston's military history is rich. There are several military museums and the restored Fort Henry is manned each summer by university students in full military dress. Interested in sailing? Join the many boats which dot Lake Ontario on breezy summer days. Boating facilities are excellent and sailing conditions ideal on the course where sailors competed in the 1976 Olympics. If you'd rather relax and let someone else man the helm, take a Thousand Islands boat tour along the Saint Lawrence River. Visit Upper Canada Village, near Morrisburg, and step back in time. The village is staffed by "pioneers", who perform daily tasks just as they did more than 100 years ago. Take a day or two off the Heritage Highway and head north to Ottawa, the nation's capital. See the Parliament Buildings, which tower over the Ottawa River. Tour the House of Commons and Senate, then ride to the top of the Peace Tower for a great view of the city. Stroll beside the Rideau Canal (in winter, the canal becojnes the world's longest man-made skating rink). Spend an evening at the National Arts Centre, a splendid building dedicated to the performing arts in Canada. From Ottawa it's a short drive to the cosmopolitan city of Montreal, second largest French-speaking city in the world. Mont Royal, 225 m (750 feet) above sea level, overlooks the sprawling metropolis -- magnificent lighted sight at night. And nighttime is when Montreal comes alive. Enjoy classy French restaurants, intimate cafes (outdoors in summer), pulsating discotheques, nightclubs, concerts, and theatre. By day, visit the restored Notre Dame Cathedral or City Hall, overlooking Place Jacques Cartier. The underground cit) featuring three huge "Places" -Ville Marie, Bonaventure and Canada --is linked by the most modern subway system in the world. Above ground highlights are Man and his World --a continuation of Expo 67, the world's fair --and the Olympic Stadium, the showpiece of the 1976 Olympic Games. Highway 138, the Old Kings Road, following the St. Lawrence River linking Montreal to the city of Quebec is a route rich in history. Early explorers such as Jacques Cartier and Samuel de Champlain travelled along the Saint Lawrence River.
