Village Squire, 1978-07, Page 13Potter} from Beechwood Pottery is featured at The Rain Barrel.
Ncithout knots or scuffs, is plentiful on the west coast, he says, but in
Ontario it can be hard to come by. It's one of the problems he's
working on.
The couple also does stained glass work themselves although with
the hectic time they've had getting the shop ready, they've had little
chance to get any pieces made for their shop.
The plans for the workshop in the rear will be a boom in the future
because it will allow them to work away between customers at
whatever glass or furniture they have on the go in the workshop.
Jim says he enjoys working with wood although he wouldn't call
his job as a carpenter his perfect idea of a job. He's been at it since
it began as a summer job when he was in school. He comes from a
family of builders. His home originally was in nearby Benmiller.
Joanne comes from Seaforth but moved with her parents to
Goderich six years ago.
Another of the expanded areas that Joanne would like to pursue is
a quilt corner in the shop. Already she carries quilting materials and
supplies but she'd like to find people to make quilts for sale in the
shop or to custom make quilts for people who order them through
the shop. Eventually she'd like to have quilters come in to teach the
art to novices in classes.
Joanne says she hopes the shop will be open Sundays, at least
she'd like•to try it to see how it would do. She doesn't mind working
the longer hours she says because she can go at her own pace
without people telling her how to make use of her time.
She had plenty of experience in taking orders after working in a
long variety of jobs. mostly in stores or restaurants. It was valuable
experience. she says because she learned something different from
each business she worked for and met different kinds of people as
customers in each. Like many people who start up their own shops,
Joanne enjoys meeting people and loves to have people come in and
browse. even if they don't buy the first time. She says she doesn't
think she'd enjoy working anywhere but in a store.
While the store will depend to a certain extent on tourist
business. the couple still feels that local shoppers are the backbone
of their clientele. In fact Joanne gets upset with the emphasis that
has been placed on treating the tourist better that's recently
received so much publicity. She feels shops should treat everyone,
whether tourist or local person, the same. Certainly tourist business
is needed in the community, she says, but the local people are the
bread and butter of the community business and shouldn't be
forgotten in the attempt to seek tourist dollars. There are so many
things the town could do to make tourists more at home without
trying to dictate to businessmen how to treat tourists she says.
Once things get squared away with the shop Joanne hopes that
she and Jim will be able to contribute more of their own work to the
shop since she is interested in nearly every kind of craft herself. It's
just part of her wide-ranging personal interests. Although the
couple will settle in the apartment above the store for the present.
one of Joanne's dreams is to have a homestead in the country where
she can keep chickens and cows and horses. She loves old things,
simple things she says and hates things synthetic.
With the energy and enthusiasm this couple has, one doesn't
doubt someday they'll get that place in the country. In a time when
everyone seems full of doom and gloom the Dursts are a refreshing
couple to talk to.
