wanted her to see. Now that the store is open there are a lot of
people who bring their work in for her to see hoping she will sell it.
That of course delights her, but also provides a problem. While
she wants to help out as many craftsmen as possible, she is also
very concerned about keeping the quality of the product she sells
tops. It's meant she has had to say no to some people. She says she
hates to offend people but she wants only good quality crafts in her
shop.
The shop depends to a great extent on local people and their
crafts, she says. One of the first tasks is to increase the stock,
Joanne says but "we're working into it gradually. We can't go out
and buy a million dollars worth of stock."
The shop carries consignment articles from local craftsmen and if
there's something a customer wants but can't find in the store, the
chances are he or she can have it custom made. The Dursts or their
supplying craftsmen will tackle nearly anything.
One of the areas they want to get more into is custom-built
furniture where Jim's experience comes in handy. He can take a
pattern off something brought in by a customer and build the
furniture to the needs of the person. One of the big problems, he
says, is in getting good "clear" pine in eastern Canada. Such pine.
