and then tells the story of the ugly duckling. And indeed, just as
the ugly duckling, she is one day taken away and put in an
asylum. Dad shakes his head in sorrow, as much for her children,
who insisted upon it, as for the old lady, for he doesn't see the
necessity to lock someone up who doesn't impose on anyone in
any way. "We wouldn't have our Arthur now," he says, "if it
wasn't for her."
But her children are relieved that the embarrassment, that is
their mother, has been removed from the view of the community.
For a few days Arthur runs to her house to share some great
secret with her, but after finding the door closed. he soon forgets
too. He has a whole life ahead of him. thanks to Old Mrs. Gladys,
and not enough time to live it fully.
