Village Squire, 1978-06, Page 25after them, shrieking from impotent fury. But she can never
catch any of them. Arthur's father has told her often to pay no
heed to these hoodlums. "If they get no response." he says.
"they get no satisfaction from their acts and will stop this
nonsense by themselves." She knows he is right. He is a wise
pian, but she just can't stop herself when they are at it again.
Arthur however trusts her. and the unquestioning trust of a
three year old child touches her somewhere in her turbulent
senses. She knows that many in the village think that she is not
right in the upstairs, but she herself knows better and Arthur
knows better too. This gives her a great Lift.
Suddenly she realizes that she hasn't heard Arthur's train for
the last few minutes. Looking out of her back window she sees
something disappear behind her chicken house. Was that Art?
Behind the row of houses where they live are all kinds of home
made sheds and buildings. Most are built in the far end of each
yard. just in front of the swamp. Her chicken house, which she
has built herself. is only inches from the edge of the swamp.
"My God." she says to herself," that boy'is gonna fall right into
that swamp. and we won't be able to find him again." With a
speed one' would have thought impossible for such an old lady,
she is out of her kitchen, across her back -yard and behind the
chicken house. For a moment she sees nothing and her heart just
about stops. The she screams. and screams. for all she can see is
tv.o little feet sticking out of the oozing mud of the swamp. Her
screaming brings the whole neighbourhood to the back and many
a one thinks that she has at last completely gone over the brink
and nos•: has to be put away for sure. She doesn't wait and with
the scream still vibrating in the air. she jumps into mud up to her
hips and pulls and pulls at the small feet sticking so forlornly out
of the swampy goo.
With gasses burbling and the smell of rotten vegetation filling
the air and a sound like an obscene kiss, the boy comes to the top
and to every ones relief. sets up a howl. interspersed with small
pauses to spit out the stinking pieces of swamp he carries in his
mouth.
