Come summer, there just isn't anyplace in Canada that offers
the variety and quality of theatre as Western Ontario. This
month we take a look at the upcoming season for the Western
Ontario theatres.
Heading the list of course is the world famous Stratford
Festival. The Festival just seems to get bigger and bigger every
year. This year with the re-emergence of the Third Stage the
Festival is producing an incredible 18 plays during the season,
plus many special musical events.
Second in terms of longevity on the local theatre scene has
been the Huron Country Playhouse, now entering its 7th season
at Grand Bend. Like the Festival it began in a tent and now has
its own home. Unlike the glamour of the Festival the theme here
has always been country informality and the theatre is built to
appear like a barn and an actual barn serves as lobby space, art
gallery and dressing rooms.
One of the most ambitious and fastest growing theatres has
been the Blyth Summer Festival which is entering its fourth
season. It presents all Canadian plays and this year there will be
five original stage works, all dealing with rural and small town
themes.
Farther south, Victoria Playhouse in Petrolia is presenting its
second season of original productions in historic Petrolia
Playhouse. This year the Artistic Director is Patricia Mahoney
who produced the successful winter school programs for Theatre
Go Round.
And the southernmost theatre, is also the newest. The Port
Stanley Summer Festival is beginning its first season. It's
founded by Londoner Jim Schaefer, a veteran of the formative
years of the Blyth Summer Festival.
