Each bundle stays in the reactor an average of nine months and provides sufficient energy to supply an average household with electricity for 170 years during that time. The uranium fuel gives of neutrons which are slowed by collisions with molecules of heavy water, in similar fashion to a ball bouncing off other balls on a billiard table. The slow neutron is captured by a uranium (U-235) atom which splits, sending out more neutrons and large amounts of heat. The chain reaction of atom splitting provides a steady flow of heat to produce steam to drive the turbines and generators to produce electricity. At present Ontario's Hydro supply comes about 43 per cent from water power, 37 per cent from fossil fuels like coal. oil and gas and 20 per cent from nuclear power.
