Village Squire, 1978-05, Page 11be done to save some of the past and help today's generation and
generations in the future, realize what things were like for the
pioneers who settled this country more than a century ago.
The result is Fanshawe, Pioneer Village on the banks of
Fanshawe Lake at the North east corner of London. (See the map
for directions).
The first buildings were brought in from East and West
Missouri townships and over the years other buildings were
added. The log buildings were taken apart. piece by piece in the
original sites. then trucked to the village and put back together.
Some of the farm buildings were taken to the village intact while
others %:ere reconstructed from old materials and old plans.
Many of the furnishings in the buildings were taken from the
University Museum collection while others were donations from
local residents.
You'll find it an inexpensive place to visit. Admission is only
50c for adults and 25c for children. It opens for the season May
19 and is open 10-5 daily.
Among the buildings on the site are a log cabin. typical of
those built by the pioneers and a log stable and log barn. Unlike
log houses. log barns are almost unseen in this day and age.
Other buildings on the site include a replica of an early
ne'. spaper printing office built as a centennial project in 1967 by
the London Frcc Press. It v.as donated to the village after
centennial year.
There is a school house built by the Students Working in an
Environmental Enhancement Program and a firehall that is a
replica of a typical tirehall of the era and houses a London fire
reel oft 867. The Lochaber Presbyterian Church is also on the site
having been moved 25 miles from a site near Nairn. There is a
blacksmith shop that is a replica of one that stood at the corner of
Highbury and Fanshawc. The N.cavcr's shop .as built by
