Village Squire, 1978-03, Page 22The peasant dirndl skirt will be all the rage this spring, with
the three tiered look gathered at the elasticized waist and
trimmed with two or three flounces.
Other stylish looks will be the tiny knife pleated skirt. and the
tailored A-line skirt, shown often with the military khaki look.
Again the cotton printed flowery pattern will be prevalent.
with plain polyester and wool skirts second.
"This .spring is the season for the blouse," said Joy. and
"everything is big and loose."
Some of the numerous blouse styles include: the blouson
blouse with elasticized drawstring at the waist; the feminine long
sleeve blouse with ruffled neck and cuffs; the small self -tie at the
neck; bow blouses; and the blouse with buttons placed on the
rolled up short sleeves.
Once again the predominate fabric will be cotton, and the
blouses will be either plain, stripes or tiny prints. Common
colours will be white, cream and pastels.
T-shirts will also be available in both short and cap sleeves,
and in a variety of colours and patterns.
"T-shirts are always, always in," said Miss Hammond.
This spring, slacks will not be as popular as dresses and skirts,
said Rosemary Davison, owner of The Clothes Closet in
Goderich.
Chic slack styles will be the French pleats in the front of the
pant, and the pin stripe slack. Slacks will remain basically
straight. with a slight flare at the bottom.
Stylish colours will be white, beige, navy. brown and pastels.
Pants will also appear in a variety of fabrics from cottons. to
polyester blends to knits.
For the extremely fashionable woman, the Harem pant is in.
The Harem pant is very big, with loose flowing material gathered
at the ankle in an elasticized effect. Joy said this baggy tight at
the ankle look will be more common in the cities than in small
towns.
Pantsuits have also remained in fashion for spring.
Valerie Marshall, of Marshall's women's wear in St. Marys
said for spring the smart look for pantsuits will be the plain
man -tailored vested suit in light shades and pastels.
A new look in jackets, according to Rosemary, will be the
shorter plain jacket that fits the waistline then flares out. This
jacket will be worn with matching slacks and skirts in the light
and pastel shades.
For the more casual look in suits and co-ordinates, a blouson
short sleeve top with either similiar pants or skirt will be
available. The pin stripe pattern in pastel shades will be the
fashionable look in this style.
According to Rosemary, the stylish look in spring coats will be
the big unfitted coat, and the hooded coat. Gommon colours for
spring coats will be beige, light blue and green.
Accessories always complete an outfit, and this spring scarves
and shawls will be the rage.
"Shawls are in, for everything has a shawl with it," said Joy,
adding that turbans will also be in vogue.
And according to Miss Hammond, jewelry, hair combs, and
flowers in the hair, around the neck and waist will accentuate the
fashionable look for spring.
THE LOOK FOR MEN
For men, the look this spring will be quiet, sophisticated and
soft with emphasis on pastel shades.
In casual wear, the fashionable man will be wearing a knit
short button or open neck shirt with matching slacks in either a
plain or quiet check pattern. Popular colours in casual wear will
be beige, brown, powder blue and mint green. Polyester will be
the most prevalent pant material, as it is both comfortable and
washable.
"I would say basically knits are going to be fairly important,"
said Ray Bennett, of Ray Bennett's Limited in St. Marys.
And according to Bob Campbell, of Campbell's Men's Wear in
Clinton, the short sleeve casual shirt will also appear in the light
weight velour(velvet-light terrycloth) material.
