Village Squire, 1978-03, Page 14involvement didn't stop there, however, as her mother came
along to help out in the store.
Although she admits she • didn't know just what she was
getting into, Loree says she's very happy to be in the business.
She enjoys the satisfaction of making people happy with what
they've purchased.
It isn't the career she exactly pictured for herself when she
first thought of getting into the clothing business. After
graduating from F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham she
went to Sheridan thinking she'd like to be a buyer of fashions for
a large company, but now she wouldn't want to do that. It's a
complicated business, she says, and on a huge scale. Many
buyers have to go to New York to take special studies. And of
course you have to live in a large city, something she didn't like.
Some people, however, wouldn't relish the idea of starting up
business in their old hometown, especially at a young age. There
are too many people who remember you when you were "this
high". For Loree, however, it's been a good experience. Local
residents have been very warm in their welcome home and if
anything, Loree says, were more enthused about her opening a
shop than she was. People, particularly many of the older
people, have been quick to try to help her out.
Her mother's presence in the store also has helped, Loree
says. Many of the older people find it hard to deal with someone
so young but find it easier to deal with Mrs. Gammie. Mrs.
Gammie says she enjoys the work. "It's something I've always
wanted to do myself," she says of Loree's store.
The two make a good team, Loree with her knowledge of the
business and her appeal to younger clientele, and her mother
with the older set. Despite her age, Loree supplies clothing for
women of all ages. The local market is too small for her to
specialize in just one age group, she says. She tries to have
junior, misses and sizes for larger people. She's been successful
in attracting customers not only from the local community but
other towns as well.
The two go to Toronto on buying trips. Loree says she finds her
