You won't go
away hungry
at Wing's Restaurant
The lady is a Chinese food addict so it's
hard to go too many months without
hunting out one of the areas few Chinese
restaurants to sample their fare. This
month it was a visit to Wing's Restaurant
in Mitchell. Wing's on appearance is a
typical small town Chinese restaurant.
Decor clean but unexceptional. Family
operation with staff working long hours.
(Monday to Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.,
Friday and Sat. 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. and
Sunday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
We arrived on a mid -week, midwinter's
night about seven and so had no trouble
getting excellent service. We were also
astounded at the quantity of food served
and had to wonder if it was always so
plentiful or if we were getting special
treatment because it was a slow night. It
became obvious, however, that we weren't
being fed leftovers prepared for the earlier
rush period and unsold.
After a good deal of indecision over the
large variety offered in the menu we
settled for a dinner for two including two
egg rolls, sweet and sour chicken,. diced
Almond chicken, Guy Ding, Mushroom
Fried Rice, fortune cookies and tea.
We started off with a piping hot coffee to
warm our bones from the chill outside.

The chop, chop, chop sound from the
kitchen made it obvious that most of the
vegetables were being specially prepared
for this meal. The egg rolls had a fresh
crispy appearance when they arrived and
were well filled with sprouts.
The sweet and sour chicken and the
mushroom fried rice appeared slightly
ahead of the almond chicken, guy ding. All
were in servings so large they seemed to be
a dinner for four, not two. There were for
instance, over a dozen chicken balls. The
platter with the rice was heaped high and
the guy ding also filled the plate to nearly
overflowing.
The dishes were made with good fresh
mushrooms, celery and other vegetables
giving the meal the kind of summery
freshness so welcome in the middle of
winter. It was a pleasant change from so
many restaurants who take the easiest
route to making a meal, canned or frozen
vegetables even in the middle of summer.
It came down to three servings for each
of us and left no room for anything but the
cookies for dessert, though an appealing
display of homemade pies stood in a
glass -fronted cabinet just a few feet away.
The service, as we said earlier, was
prompt, efficient and courteous. In all it
was a pleasant meal all round. 0
