Village Squire, 1977-12, Page 48Heading the way will be Larry Fineberg
who wrote Eve. from Constance Beresford-
Howe's novel. The Story of Eve for the
1976 season. This year Fineberg will see
his play Devotion premiered at the Avon
Theatre. His second work, Medea, first
performed at a 1975 workshop at Stratford,
will be produced at Third Stage.
Two Vancouver playwrights, Tom Cone
and Sheldon Rosen will have plays done at
Third Stage..Cone's play called Stargazing,
which was commissioned by the Festival, is
a contemporary comedy about two brothers
and their wives. He has previously had
plays produced in Toronto, Montreal, New
York and Vancouver.
Rosen's play, Ned and Jack deals with a
personal moment in the life of two friends,
famous actor John Barrymore and
producer -playwright Edward Sheldon.
Sheldon was crippled by polio at the height
of his career and confined to his bed for the
rest of his life. He remained a friend and
mentor to the most important people of the
theatre early in the century. The play takes
place one night before Sheldon became
totally crippled but when he knew the
certainty of his future.
Rosen was playwright in residence at the
National Arts Centre last year and has had
plays produced in Toronto and Vancouver.
The fifth Canadian play of the season
will be a new version of Chekov's Uncle
Vanya to be produced at the Avon. It's
written by Calgary playwright John
Murrell whose earlier play Memoir, a story
about Sarah Bernhardt starring Siobhan
McKenna was performed at the Guelph
Spring Festival and in Dublin Ireland.
HISTORY OF STRATFORD ON THE WAY
A history of Stratford has been
commissioned from a Toronto-based
freelance writer at a cost of S20,000 to the
city.
Adelaide Leitch, author of seven books
including two histories of Ontario counties
and several books of juvenile fiction is
expected to spend over a year preparing
the history. She won the commission over
three other candidates, two of them from
Stratford. Alderman Jack Hamilton said
she was selected because she will produce
a history that will sell. He based his
assessment on the sales of her two
previous histories Into the High Country
and The Visible Past, the histories of
Dufferin and Simcoe counties.
Miss Leitch is a graduate of University of
Toronto and worked on the Midland Free
Press -Herald, the Windsor Star, was
managing editor of Newfoundland's
Atlantic Guardian and has written for
several magazines.
She will be rewriting and editing
material already collected over the past
four years by Tom Dolan, former managing
editor of the Beacon Herald and a group of
associates. The book is expected to be in
the neighbourhood of 300-350 pages in
length and Alderman Hamilton, who had
the job of recommending an author to city
council said a printing of 5000 copies is
ext, ected when the book is finished. A sale
of that number would mean the book just
about breaks even. he said.
