Hessen Haus

for the pastries
This time of the year with holiday
schedules cramped. dining out can often be
just too much to squeeze in. The quick
lunch while shopping. however. is often a
necessity.
We tried a quick lunch this month when
we stopped in at Hessen Haus on main
Street in Seaforth. The restaurant has in
the past been one of those typical main
street restaurants but it's slowly undergo-
ing a transformation since a German
couple bought it several months back.
Renovations were still being made in the
washroom area when we visited so
apparently the transformation is not yet
complete.
Evidence of German fare is not yet
widespread in the menu. We looked for it
but found only Wieners and sauerkraut.
Not being a sauerkraut fan we went with
the special of the day, meat loaf.
That can be a dangerous meal in some
restaurants. Meatloaf can be just about
anything (including. it often 'seems.
sawdust) and we've tasted it when it kept
coming back all day long.
In this case. however. it was a pleasant
surprise. The meatloaf was tasty with
plenty of rich gravy to spread over the

mashed potatoes. The vegetables were
obviously frozen but the cook made the
best of them. And there were no unhappy
reminders later either.
The Hessen Haus shines in its desserts.
The pies and pastries we understood are
baked right on the premises and at 50 cents
a slice must be considered a bargain. We
took the recommendation of the waitress
and tried the peach dessert (at slightly
more cost). It's a specialty of the house and
features peaches in a thick sauce on a thin
slice of cake and topped with whipped
cream (or at least dessert topping). It
proved very good and after seeing the look
of the raisin pie delivered to a nearby table,
we wished we'd been able to sample all the
pies.
Price of the meal was $2.50.
Hopefully Heesen Haus will continue to
move toward offering unique meals
unavailable elsewhere in the area. In a
small town you can't afford to specialize
completely. but it would be a treat to have
a few tasty different meals on the menu.
We'll drop back in some time later and
report on what progress the Hessen Haus
has been making. And also to try some
more of that delicious pie. 0
