Village Squire, 1977-11, Page 25Au revoir, but not goodbye
In the town of Clinton lives a gentleman who well might be the
finest wood turner in our big province.
Of course we are referring to John Plumtree. a craftsman
whose dedication to excellence in his trade is such that if there
was a way of achieving 105 per cent perfection rather than a
meager 100. John would never rest until he had natched the
ultimate.
Many of us irr Huron county and well beyond are fortunate
enough to own and prize his work. These pieces are not only a
present joy but an inheritance to pass on to the generations that
follow. Candlesticks. bowls. flower containers, wash stands are
on the list and each separate piece brought to its own rich luster.
whether it be black cherry, mahogany or walnut. One can only
guess at the hundreds of homes that are a bit brighter for the
display of John's fine work.
Alas. John has for the time being turned to the repair of
antique furniture and we may no longer go to local craft shows to
admire his work and choose a favourite piece with care. always
worried that while we are making up our own minds, someone
may reach past us and snatch the very item we were about to
select.
To become a fine surgeon in wood to the broken legs of other
craftsmen's handiwork is indeed a worthwhile endeavor. but it is
labour that leaves one anonymous. Create on your own and you
gain a spark of immortality.
John. we hope you will return to your lathe.
