business.
It was starting to get cold now, so in order to keep from
freezing, they piled more wood on the fire and huddled close to
one another. Jack soon fell asleep but Tom made up his mind to
stay awake and keep the fire burning. Tom was not only lost, but
with his brother asleep, he was also alone. He cursed the cattle,
he cursed the swamp, and he cursed himself for being so dumb
as to get lost, but after thinking a while he prayed, "Lord, let us
out of here, please let us out". It wasn't long before he fell
asleep.
They woke the next morning stiff from the cold. The fire was
out but to their amazement they found they were surrounded by
cattle. They sprang to their feet with joy. The rest of the morning
was spent following the cattle through the swamp, was not quite
damp from the recent snowfall. When Jack saw that the bush
was beginning to thin out he knew that it wouldn't be long before
they were free. They boys looked at each other, grinned, and
suddenly let out a tremendous cry, "Yip -yip -ye -haw!" The cattle
stampeded the last 500 yards with both boys following close
behind.
When they finally escaped th4 dreadful swamp, the adventure
seemed almost unreal. They had experienced something that
they would remember for the rest of their lives. ❑
