Village Squire, 1977-10, Page 35a reader that former area residents were
gathering money to erect a plaque to the
near -forgotten hamlet.
Another mile and a quarter and we reach
a string of houses called locally Rapid City,
just north of Lucknow. We'll turn left here
on Concession 1-2 of Kinloss township
(before you get to the railway tracks) and
head eastward. across a small stream and
up a hill past stately South Kinloss
Presbyterian Church. with a cemetery
where many of the early pioneers of the
area were buried.
Fieldstone houses were popular with the
farmers on this concession and many stand
in fine shape still. Travel about two and a
half miles to the second sideroad and turn
right. The narrow road has trees
overhanging prettily in many places. Less
than a mile down on your right you'll catch
glimpses of a lake called Purves' Lake by
the pioneers and later called Fairy Lake
and Paradise Lake by other owners. It's a
private lake now.
You'll soon come to Highway 86 where
you can jog to your right before crossing
the highway a few hundred feet west and
proceeding southward toward St. Helens
on West Wawanosh township sideroad
18-19.
St. Helens, about two miles to the south
of the highway is another of those
once -thriving communities which is now
forgotten by most people. It features a
store, a church, several houses and some
interesting old buildings such as a
picturesque old mill.
Turn left at the main intersection in the
village and proceed eastward again. You're
back in Huron county by now but again the
land is rolling here, particularly as you
draw nearer the Maitland River Valley.
Suddenly you come over a hill and there is
the river below you in the valley. It's
crossed by one of those long iron bridges
that are becoming rare sights in the
countr:' these days.
You might want to drive a mile or so
along the sideroad that follows the west
bank of the river from a point just west of
the bridge. There are some beautiful views
of the water along the way.
We'll head east across the old bridge
and up into rolling farmland again heading
straight east until we come to Highway 4.
From there you can go left to Wingham and
across highway 86 and 87 back to our
starting point at Wroxeter or you can
proceed in your own direction. The trip
can be taken in slightly over two hours or
be stretched into much longer time if you
have a camera along. There are many
many sights along the way to make you
wish you were a painter. E
