at Western
to open
expanded gallery
A grant of $100.000 has been given to
The University of Western Ontario's
Museum of Indian Archaeology for its
development as a regional centre for the
study, display and interpretation of
southwestern Ontario archaeological dis-
coveries.
The money comes from The Richard and
Jean Ivey Fund of London. The Museum,
which has existed with limited facilities
since 1933, will now be incorporated as a
non-profit organization. Space in Somer-
ville House at the University has been
renovated and will be turned into a gallery.
Tareet date for openine is early in 1978, in
time for Western's centenary celebrations.
Office and research areas belonging to the
Museum, which is now quartered in
Middlesex College, will be retained.
The new centre will be under the
directorship of Dr. William Finlayson. A
drive to raise an additional $40.000 a year
for the next three years will be conducted
to pay for the operating expenses of the
facility, Dr. Finlayson says. Efforts will
also be made to 'establish an endowment
fund to provide a permanent source of
operating funds for the museum and
money to construct a building beside the
site of a 450 year-old Indian village located
a few miles from the University.
Building the museum and reconstructing
the village will take 15 to 20 years to
complete and represent the final stages of
Dr. Finlayson's development plan. The
first goal, for which the Ivey Fund has
provided money, is completion o, ole
gallery as an educational and recreational
facility for the community.
The Museum would also become a
centre of excellence for research and
training of archaeologists. Experimenta-
tion and development of computer
techniques for acquisition, description.
processing and analyzing archaeological
data will continue. Western currently has
one of Canada's most sophisticated
systems for computerized handling of
archaelogical data.
A Tong -term survey of the archaeological
resources of southwestern Ontario is also
part of the plan. Evidence suggests that
there are more than 300 archaeological
sites within 40 miles of London.
Development of the Museum includes
plans for continuation of its research
program based on contracts from agencies,
institutions and individuals. continued
publication and improvement of the
Bulletin of the Museum, and promotion of
an interdisciplinary approach to the study
of man's past which will include
