RON AND PEGGY SHAW just don't
seem to be able to stand prosperity. The
couple, who have made their home base
Goderich for several years, recently left to
work with the CARE relief agency in the
impoverished nation of Bangladesh. Ron, a
writer whose work has appeared from time
to time in the Village Squire had trained as
a journalist and came to Goderich when he
was employed by the Goderich Signal -Star.
The couple went to Africa in 1974 for the
Canadian Hunger Foundation where they
helped in the drought -stricken area of
Niger. west Africa. They returned to
Goderich after two years and Ron and
brother Richard established Ron Shaw
Visual Productions, a company covering
news and features for local newspapers
and television and radio stations.Richard
continues the business.
PIERRE BERTON may have a name that
stirs up a lot of interest in Canada but he
doesn't seem to have much pull with
Stratford City council. Berton was upset
when he heard that the Royal Bank of
Canada was going to demolish its
65 -year-old building across from Stratford
city hall. He came to the assistance of the
local architectural conservation advisory
committee with a strongly worded letter to
city council asking them to change their
mind in not opposing the bank's demolition
of make way for a new structure, saying it
would detract from the atmosphere of
Market Square. Berton called the
demolition an "act of vandalism". But the
letter never even got before city council.
Mayor KEITH CULLITON said he spoke
with Mr. Berton and told him council had
already dealt with the matter.
When alderman TONY LAZOS complained
that he had not even had a chance to read
the letter and asked that it be put before
the entire council his motion was defeated.
Hopeful! for Mr. Berton, next piece of his
literature, a new bank expected soon, will
not have such a limited readership.
It may not have been listed in Where To
Eat in Canada, but to local Clinton
customers, Vicki's Country Steak House
was a popular meeting place. It may still be
in years to come but Vicki won't be there.
VICKI HORBANIUK grilled her last steak
last month after 25 years in the building at
the north end of Clinton just off Highway 4.
She and her late husband first operated a
grocery store then later she opened a
restaurant in part of the building. "For the
past 25 years we've shared a lot of sorrows
and joys in this neighbourhood but it's just
the memories you have to remember," she
says. She was also a leading force in the
"Country Singles" organization in Huron
county.
If somebody ever told RENE and
XAVIER BOOGEMANS to go paddle their
own canoe it's no telling where the pair
might end up. The brothers, from Hensall
and Grand Bend respectively recently won
the expert marathon canoe race at the
Ontario Summer Games. They finished the
nine -mile race around Guelph Lake in a
time of one hour, eight minutes and 44
seconds, narrowly edging out a Windsor
team by two-fifths of a second. The two
teams had battled it out at the
Southwestern Ontario Regional Games at
Windsor in June with the same results,
except that the Boogemans had a more
comfortable margin of almost a minute.
This time they were trading with only
about 10 feet to go but pulled ahead at the
finish line, hitting, Xavier thought, about
80 strokes per minutes, rather than their
normal 65-70.
As if all that racing wasn't enough, Rene
will be competing in early September in a
three-day 118 -mile race at Shawinigan
Quebe with WARREN KNIGHT, of
Brussels, because Xavier is unable to get
away to attend.
Five long-time servants of the people in
Stratford may be sporting Silver Jubilee
Medallions if the federal government
accepts their nomination as put forward by
city council. The Stratford council recently
nominated former city clerk LAURENCE
GRAHAM, former Mayor C.H. [DUTCH]
MEIER, ALAN R. MOORE former owner
of Moore's Leather Goods and a 26 -year
member of the Public utilities Commission,
