LONDON SURVEY NUMBER FOUR:
CRAFTS, LONDON ART GALLERY.
The London Art Gallery proudly presents
London Survey Number Four: Crafts from
September 2 to October 2, 1977, with a
preview opening at 8:30 p.m. Friday,
September 9.
This survey show which is the fast of four
shows which examined the artistic activity
of London and area, gives the public an
opportunity to view the variety and quality
of crafts that are being produced.
Paul Bennett, the Executive Director of
the Ontario Crafts Council, based in
Toronto, acted as juror for this show and in
his two weeks in London and area visited
42 studios and homes examining the work
of more than 100 craft persons. The show
which resulted from his final selection
includes examples of jewellery, pottery,
batik, children's toys, quilts, wall hangings
and rugs. As juror for this exhibition, Mr.
Bennett also wrote an introduction for the
catalogue, from which the following was
taken:
"No doubt the London craft scene
reflects the total Ontario scene because it
has the same educational oportunities
available to people interested in crafts
throughout the province.
In the total visual arts scene, the
craftsman has the same inspiration as the
painter and the sculptor -- all these visual
artists are exposed to the visual stimulus of
London, the sense of cultural excitement,
encouragement and indeed, opposition, all
exciting facets of this major Ontario city."
Today's definition of crafts is far
reaching. As seen in this show it takes in
both traditional and contemporary con-
cepts, designs and means of production. It
takes in the use of time honoured materials
side by side with the products of new
technology.
